Spot on analysis.

Take a 3 or 4 star with a good arm and is smart. Figure out some kind of recognition test to give them and take guys who pass it.

A game manager who can occasionally make plays as your back up, or maybe can be the guy. Then go grab a guy like Mateer out of the portal as your now guy.

You probably spend less that way you can use on your OL

I think that the "smart move" going forward is to sign ~Top 250 type QB's from HS. You save a ton of money upfront versus signing a 5-star HS QB (~Top 30 player), so if they don't develop or choose to leave its no big deal. If you go through 2-3 classes of signing Top 250 QB's and none of them look like they are going to develop into an impact starter for you, the money that you saved over those years can immediately be used to buy a proven transfer portal QB.

There is no point in fronting the upfront cost and playing time on a 5-star HS QB who isn't even guaranteed to become an elite player. Even if they do become an elite player, it is highly unlikely that it will be immediate. So you are likely paying millions and living with "growing pains" seasons along the way. And like I said, this isn't like the NFL where your investment into a young QB can turn into a 10+ year career with your franchise. These kids all expect to be in the NFL after their 3rd season; so if you are spending 1-2 years of growing pains for a 5-star HS QB to learn and develop while dropping some games for you, is it really an efficient strategy when they will just leave for the NFL after their Junior season if they do finally put it all together?

If you sign Top 250 QB's you still have the potential of one of them turning into a star, but you have the added flexibility of not only not needing to pamper them and force them onto the field, but also the financial flexibility allows you to freely upgrade from the portal with a proven QB.

For instance, with the money Auburn has paid out to Jackson Arnold (who has 2 or 3 seasons of eligibility left) and incoming 5 star freshman QB Deuce Knight how will that work? And, Auburn didn't bring Arnold in to be serviceable. It seems to me with that scenario money can't help but to be wasted.

I think every situation is different, and I think you just nailed the Auburn scenario dead on. It’s a wasted year. Freeze at Auburn has to show improvement with a lot of the highly rated talent he has turning into sophomores and juniors. He’s using Arnold as a bridge for Deuce, bc it’s more probable for Auburn to win 8 games next year with Arnold and his experience vs Deuce’s youth tho he probably has more potential. Less mistakes by Arnold, better at understanding clock management, knows the speed of the game. Freeze did what he did to keep his arse off the hot seat.

You usually recruit High School for elite talent and the portal for a game manager, fill-in, and backup.

Good post. This whole NIL/portal era we find ourselves chained to is going to change everything about what you recruit and why.

That is truly what convinced Nick to retire I think.

You have to recruit your own roster, almost as much as your recruit anything else. Tampering will be rampant. Building a team through development is going away for the most part.

It’s a new environment where the old ways are going to struggle to be effective. In ways it’s like me and real estate. I absolutely hate the way that changed last year, and I retired rather than do it the new way. Yes I could still do it and make a lot of money, but I have enough and don’t need the aggravation at my age.

Do you?

Most of Oregon's starting lineup is transfer portal players. Including the QB. If we look at the remaining playoff teams; Ohio State, Oregon, and Notre Dame are all led by experienced transfer portal QB's who are playing in their first seasons with their current Playoff team. Arizona State and Texas have transfer portal QB's leading them as well, but they were brought in as underclassmen.

Either way, only 2 of the 8 starting QB's in this year's Quarterfinals were signed out of HS by the team that they currently play for.

Very well said but beyond obvious. I have no idea how fans and even people who get paid to coach and run programs do not get this.

Spending money on NIL is overwhelmingly a bad investment. What kind of results are you expecting beyond winning another game or two (at best) by spending millions?

What does that get you for a return?

OP is right. Milroe is an insanely talented QB. Would have been helpful to see him play against come college competition….

I've seen many 5 star QBs bust in college. Its all based on the competition...... Not sure how college coaches haven't figured this out by now. Go find one lighting it up and NIL him to your school.

Will the JUCO rule extend to FCS?

Playing is always more fun than watching so I think some guys will go JUCO or FCS, get some starting experience and then transfer.
