Same. This is like when I learned that the state of Oregon has had self-serve gas pumps for only 2 years. New Jersey still doesn't pump their own gas. WTF have these people been doing?

Imagine an in-state rival

I know. No in-state rival to recruit against for players and money, and they still suck arse.

In this scenario, Arkansas is to ASU what Ole Miss is to MSU. I would tread lightly.

The policy of not playing in-state schools is an old one. Fans mostly don't care, or even think about it. Those who do care parrot something Frank Broyles said 40 years ago because Frank = Gawd to a certain age and IQ of Razorbacks fan.

As for Arkansas State University, mostly I forget they exist. When I see them playing on ESPNU or something, I root for them, because it's Arkansas kids.

I get frustrated by the opposite brand of fan who talks about it like it would be some heated "in-state rivalry" and compares it to OM/MSU or Alabama/AU. Yes, those people exist....

Playing Arkansas State in football would be slightly more exciting than playing other Sunbelt schools. Sure, they'd beat us once in a blue moon. But to pretend like it would be some kind of "statewide showdown event" is just hilarious.

I don't care either way. Do it, don't do it. Zero fricks here.

Definitely scared. Imagine if Florida didn't play all of the in-state rivals during baseball season... no way in hell will that ever happen.

Arkansas is afraid of...... Little Rock.

ASU is a very regional state school. I've lived in Arkansas most of my life, and I know and interact with exactly one ASU grad, and that is through business, and he still lives in Jonesboro.

I've never lived east of Little Rock, and there just aren't that many of them around here. It would be nothing like OM/MSU.

I actually think it's to Arkansas's benefit to play the in-state schools. It won't hurt Arkansas one bit--the other SEC schools all play (and occasionally lose) to in-state pygmies on a regular basis. It helps the little guys, which is good for the high school kids in the state. Arkansas can only have 35 players on their roster, and not all those are going to be from Arkansas. Elevating the other programs in the state will actually help at the high school level, by keeping kids more interested in baseball.

Apart from ASU being a pretty small, tiny endowment, regional state school with Sunbelt sports, they're as far a drive from Fayetteville as the north Dallas suburbs are. You can't get there from here. NWA kids who stay in-state but don't go to "UA-F" mostly wind up at UCA or Arkansas Tech.

I've literally been to Jonesboro one time in my life on a short business trip. It isn't a terrible place, especially for eastern Arkansas. It's a growing city with a lot of new development. I'd compare it to Springdale, with mosquitoes, and no Fortune 500 HQ. Lots of mfg.

This isn't unlike most major baseball programs. Midweek games are tough. Good for experience for your younger guys, but not much else to gain from them.

Hell, LSU is 1-3 vs McNeese the last 4 years. We do the same thing.

When these teams throw out their ace to win a big game like this while we throw out our 4th-6th pitchers, it makes sense why the "little" guys win these.

It's literally their super bowl and a huge RPI booster for them if they pull it off. It's merely just a scrimmage for the rest of us.

Yup, it's still frustrating though. It's the perfect setup for these smaller schools to get "bragging rights" over the flagships.

To my knowledge it does hardly anything to the SEC schools losing these games. Florida has lost these for years. It has literally almost zero effect come tournament time.

Let the little schools brag a little bit. The only mid-week games we care about are versus FSU. I go to the annual one in Jax versus FSU -- it's pretty fun. Can drink at the game, etc. Usually turns into a shite show though as you can imagine.

Who cares? State and Ole mIss don't even take the annual Mayors Trophy game that serious. Throw some mid-week starter, rest the guys that need resting, and fight the strength of the SEC every weekend. Post season baseball is all that really matters
