So this guy thinks he will actually get some clarification from the replay booth

How can it EVER be Arkansas' ball there? They never gained possession of it on that play, ever. Ever.

A horribly botched call by all involved.

Exactly. They never had the ball.

whistle was blown when the ball was on the ground after the arky player lost it

So we were the last who touched it so it's ours?

The damn commentators are more livid than the VT people.

So the review of the play ruled the whistle to be an inadvertent whistle, but then the game commentators get word from the replay booth that they didn't think possession of the ball had been gained by VT until after the whistle, so they ruled that Arkansas had retained possession of the ball. Sort of similar to if the ball had been fumbled, but then knocked out of bounds before either team gains possession of it.

So does the whistle have impact on the fumble play, or doesn't it? Or were there two whistles and I just didn't catch one of them?

My bad. I was thinking they got the ball where it was "fumbled". WTF is going on?

There was not a "fumble," so the rule allowing to see who recovers after an early blown whistle is not applicable.

the second the ball was punted, it became Virginia techs ball. Arkansas never gained possession, therefore the inadvertent whistle should have given the ball to the team who last had possession, which was tech

The refs screwed up

. The refs blew it.
doesn't seem that way. But keep in mind, the replay officials are the ones in question.

When does the punting team "lose" possession? They kicked it, and if technically nobody ever had possession before the whistle, did it just go back to Arkansas b/c they actually had it last?

Arkansas needs to go for the kill instead of sitting on this lead

When the inadvertent whistle happened it was still vatech ball, Arkansas had never gained possession following the muff.

The whistle blew after the VT player touched the ball. The ball was live with neither team possessing it when the whistle blew.
