I'm not every State fan. I'm me. But having the NIT experience was much needed and will get us to the NCAAs. It was a fun run.

I'd rather be #68 than #69. Even though you get a trophy for it.

Yes....once you get past the top 10-15 teams, there is not much difference in a team ranked #20 versus a team ranked 35-40-50-60(teams that don’t make the Big Dance)

A number of teams in the NIT could have been swapped out with NCAA teams and you would have not seen much difference in the outcomes. Swap State/WK/Penn State with Bama or Arky or Missouri and the outcome would have been probably win one and lose in the round of 32 and the latter three would have probably won three NIT games and made it to MSG. Basically interchangeable.

But for State this year, specifically for a team w/no Seniors and not having been to a tournament in five years, the NIT was a great experience and springboard into next year.
I agree for a Senior led team , the NIT is a let down with the exception of getting to play in the Garden and the trip to the Big Apple.

He has a point. What kid doesn't dream about playing in front of 2,130 raging basketball fans in the 2nd round of the NIT.

LINK

If that were true why did the team act like their dog got shot in the head when they found out the missed the tourney?

Winning the NIT I'd take over first round loss. But one tourney win is greater than all NIT wins

Fair enough

All of us want to be in the NCAA but in certain cases, the NIT can be a worthwhile venture for a team. In State’s case this year, we received multiple benefits by winning a Couple of games on the road against quality teams and going to NYC.
But this is much the exception to the rule. 99 out of 100 times , being in the NCAA is the ticket.

This is silly. There has never been a team that thought to itself...hey, it'd be awesome if we missed the actually tournament and played in the NIT. A few extra games can be valuable, but you can schedule a summer trip to Europe and get those games.

Reaching goals will always be a good thing...no team sets a goal to make the NIT.

Not silly at all. We failed to make the NCAA this year.
So would I rather sit home or play?

In this specific case, State’s run through the NIT was more valuable than making the tournament and losing in the first round.

By the end of the season, we had lost our way out of the NCAA. In this case, the NIT gave us a chance to make lemonade out of lemon.

I mean we skull dragged Louie Ville in front of a very rowdy , loud crowd on their court. For a young team like ours, that kind of experience was priceless and in this narrow case was more worth while than getting bounced out of the NCAA in the first round.

As I said , we were the one out of hundred, that benefited from being in the NIT instead of the NCAA.

No one in the world believes this outside of a few gullible fans of the teams participating.

state was a peculiar team in that they definitely benefited from the NIT, but was also just as good as some of the 8-9-10 seeds in the dance (like you said). should be able to contend for SEC title next season

Totally agree. The thrill and excitement, not to mention experience of going on a nice run all the way to MSG is as good or better than one or two and done in the big dance. I'd take going to NY almost any day of the week for some basketball

As disappointed as I am that my team got bounced in the first round, I would take that every single time over cutting down the nets in MSG. Do they even cut down the nets for NIT titles? Anyone care enough to watch and report back?

Failing to achieve a goal is always a problem. Losing breeds more losing...as an MSU fan I would think you'd understand this reality. Breaking out of a cycle is very difficult. Auburn has issues moving out of our cycle as well, but don't pretend failing to reach a goal is good thing in any case or under any circumstance.

Yea, it's great to finish number 65 in the final poll as the NIT winner does.

This is dumb. You go to the NCAA. 100% of the time even if you know you lose the first game. Now if you go to the NIT going on a run is fun and there are always a bunch of teams left out of the NCAA and a bunch of teams with no business making the tournament that do.

This year the committee did a miserable job with some of the teams the selected/left out with Oklahoma being the biggest WTF.

For this year in this tourny , the answer is yes.

3 televised games against good opponents, more? publicity.

A game against Louisville full of fans urging their team not to quit that would give Kentucky fans something to Snicker bout for years..
