Western Kentucky coach Rick Stansbury says getting his players excited for the NIT Tournament was a sales job. His pitch: Playing a semifinal at Madison Square Garden is better than losing in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

"Winning three games and getting here is much better than playing one and getting beat," Stansbury said Monday.

Totally agree. The thrill and excitement, not to mention experience of going on a nice run all the way to MSG is as good or better than one or two and done in the big dance. I'd take going to NY almost any day of the week for some basketball

I already knew it was great from all the Mississippi State fans.

Nothing shocking here, coach of team in NIT trying to keep things exciting.

Only tourney that if you win twice in a row, your coach is fired

So winning a music city bowl is better than losing in a NY6 bowl or playoff game?

bad comparison.
It is only a good thing when you have a young team like us and can make a run. Allows for extra playing time. If you have a bunch of seniors then I would think they would want to go the NCAA tournament regardless if they lose the first game by 50 and are out. My guess is we make the tournament next year and so does PSU as a much higher seed and they beat us again.

Has anyone that lost an NCAA round one game then proclaimed I wish we never made it and were playing in the NIT?
Seems like only NIT peeps think the NIT is any good. I'm still trying to figure out if it's a real thing or not. I only see information about it on message boards and never on the radio, TV, or twitter.

Freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors - they all want to go to the NCAA tournament regardless.

351 D1 Basketball Teams.
36 At Large + ~8 legit conference winners = 44 Teams make the
12.5%
130 FBS Football Teams
NY6 + Playoff = 12 Teams make bowls that matter
9%
It's not apples to apples, but it isn't a bad comparison.

There are 68 teams that make the Tournament. And they are all legit. Ask Virginia.

But I was told that some NIT teams are better than NCAA ones. That the NIT winner isn't the 69th best team. Yall need to get your stories straight.

I think it is fair to say that the NIT teams are as good as the #20-#68 teams in The NCAA but either lost in their conference tournament or lost one or two games during the regular season that cost them a NCAA bid.

Is this the most MSU mentality ever? Sincerely proposing that playing in the NIT is better than making it to the sweet 16 simply because the games are at MSG?

How are we judging them as good? They didn't do as well in the season as 68 other teams, but they're as good as #20. huh?

you think its fair to compare at-large teams to a bunch of automatic bids from low-major conferences?

Next year i will have a different opinion. But for this specific season I'm happy we made a run in the NIT. We needed multiple game experience in a tournament. This was a practice season for the big dance. We should at least make the elite 8 next year in the NCAA tournament.

Damn, combine that with your 2018 Football Championship, cow tipping title and wing eating domination and that's a good year for MSU.
