Auburn just fired (and paid a hefty buyout) a coach that finished 3rd in the SEC west.

It shows Auburn is willing to pay top dollar for a coach.

It also shows Auburn is not content with just being good.

I love it.

Not shocked, but the timing is very odd.

Alabama is 10-0.

Aubie freaks out when big bro is winning like this.

No Auburn fan is shocked. We have everything to be successful, just need to reinvigorate the fan base again and recruit heavy in the O-line and everything else will work out just fine.

A little shocked, but Georgia fired Richt after a 10-3 season so it’s not anything new. I think Gus is a pretty good coach with some really good wins. Being in the same state with Bama is always going to be a challenge.

The GusBus problem was like having a dog which was dying of old age. You know he needs to be put down but you put it off. Problem is now over. RIP.

The total money was going to be the same whether we fired him this year or 2021 or 2022.

The lack of recruiting offensive linemen sealed his fate. You have to have competent linemen to compete in this league.

Smoke and mirrors can win some games, but long term talent wins games. The more big, strong, fast linemen you can recruit on both sides of the ball, the better your chances.

Imagine Bigsby with a really good offensive line?

Imagine if someone actually taught Bo to set his feet when he throws or grab the clipboard?

Imagine a coach that other coaches sought to work for to hone their craft?

Never shocked by what Auburn does and they will 100% screw up this hire. It's what they do.

Shocked it was this year
You have to be very careful, they could end up like Tenn and their revolving door of coaches and mediocrity
I think it was a risky move

Mediocrity gets the door revolving.

I think the contract actually got Gus fired.

Top 30 results for top 5 money.

Eventually, a coach has to earn that pay. I don’t hate Gus, but I could not see any development of Bo Nox from game 1 to game 23. 23 starts in and he is not any different as far as playing the position.

Recruiting the line of scrimmage sealed Gus’s fate. It takes 4-6 scholarships a year to create a pool of offensive linemen with which to work to create a cohesive unit. We had classes with 2.

It’s hard to win without 2 deep upfront on both sides of the ball.

Timing was weird for sure. The one thing you could say about His, he had Sabans number every few years. Much, much better coaches than him can't say they same thing. Auburn might upgrade and find out they can't beat bama anymore

No. People struggling have nothing to do with this. Bad optics. LOL. It was a necessary decision to save the program from total and complete apathy. It will pay off financially in the long run.

The timing is the shock, not that he’s being fired. I guess they just got fed up with being mediocre.

Last 4 hires: 1-undefeated season. 2-undefeated season, SEC Championship 3-undefeated season, SEC Championship & National Championship. 4-SEC championship and NC appearance.

Now let’s compare that to your last 4 hires...

That's impressive on the surface, no doubt. Let's look at those last 4 hires:

1 - 4 - where did they go after AU? what were circumstances of their exits? how many left au with more appeal as a HC than they arrived to AU with? of the last 4 hires, were AU fans happy about more than 1 of them at the time of the hire?
