Up vote or down vote. I am shocked. The timing is odd with Covid-19 and despite key losses Malzahn had some stellar wins and seasons - and a $21 million buy out at a time when most American's are struggling just to get by - very bad optics.

I mean it's been coming for years. I'm kind of shocked, but only because of the timing and coming off a win, otherwise, not really

Not something I can upvote/downvote. I'm shocked that they fired him when they did and also that they retained him when they did. They've operated on a weird internal timeline with Gus.

Yea. They’re not a good enough program to get a better coach and none are really available so I don’t understand their play here. If they are trying to get Petrino or something I will die laughing.

I'm shocked. It's a big check to write. I think they already know who they are getting.

What about Tennessee HC Pruitt? Do you agreed that HC should be given another year?

Only ones who are unfamiliar with his record.

Hell no. He should've been fired weeks ago. You don't go backwards in year 3 while proving you're an idiot in every facet of the game minus being a DC (but even our defense has gone backwards). I don't know any fan that wants him around other than one guy who posts here during game threads.

The rock was actually painted this evening:

I think Auburn's move helps us immensely because it forces some action. Our AD would rather wait than move now.

Is the rock cleaned or is it 25% layers of paint by now?

The rock is never cleaned but instead just painted over with white paint or whatever is on hand. Campus uses white but students tend to do whatever. They are more formal about it now that it's in a more trafficked area of campus (the rock was moved from its original spot only to become a corporate sellout associated more with athletics in the public's imagination than its true role as campus messenger and graffiti board but the 'man' alas owns everything these days).

That said, a few years ago we had a ton of rain and it 'shed' several layers of paint. That's probably the only thing resembling a cleaning its ever had. The estimated weight loss from that was 2 to 3 tons of paint and UT had some of it preserved.

EDIT - I was wrong. It was heat and humidity that caused the paint slide. LINK /

Not shocked at all. His recruiting has slipped badly, he got blasted by Bama and Georgia, and is a perennial 4 loss coach. I believe the Auburn people in charge are tired of his "we had a good week of practice" shtick.

This is basically my reaction. I doubt Auburn would've ever fallen off a cliff with Gus, but I also doubt he would've had them competing for championships again.

Like Les, he got stuck on a plateau by not winning enough big games, and wouldn't/couldn't evolve his offense. At some point, they had to rip off the band-aid and move on.

It’s one of those things that when you know it has to be done, and you know you’re going to do it, why would you delay it? And the barners delayed it for years and at this point it’s probably too late

Yes. Especially this year. The pandemic seems to be accelerating stupidity.

Not shocked but surprised by timing a few days before signing day.

This has been coming for a while. Had he not beat Bama in ‘17 he would have been gone sooner. He had two good years in his tenure and one of those was because the football gods smiled on them.

I have great respect for Gus and wish him the very best. He is a class act and good person. Just reading comments by past and current players prove that.

Our OL recruiting has declined significantly and he has had 8 years. Horrible QB development, poor use of talented receivers, and perennial 7-8 game winner.

Don’t know why timing is bad? End of season and get a jump on the search. Makes perfect sense. The buyout in the contract he was given is a bigger shock.

Not really.

He was getting paid top 5 money for top 30 results.

Recruiting is way off this year.

0 for Athens, Baton Rouge, and Tuscaloosa.

Multiple blowout losses.

Top 5 money requires some big road wins, and top 5 money cannot get blown off the field over and over.

Gus was an average Auburn coach. 8-4 sort with some big wins.

The contract got him fired. The money was goofing to either get paid over time. Or lump sum.

Sexton got us to pay top 5 money for a top 30 coach.
