One can feel compassion for a person they don’t

Empathy or compassion for something self inflicted? Especially quitting in the Olympics in a team sport or drug addiction at a major university with all the support in the world? No, not really. For the team of the quitter and the family of the addict the 1st time or two they have to deal with it absolutely but for a quitter on that stage and a drug addict in that position? Not really. They actively made a choice and that choice has consequences.
