Compare two coaches in their jobs prior to taking head coaching jobs in the SEC.
Coach 1
Year 1: 4-7
Year 2: 8-5
Year 3: 9-4
Year 4: 7-5
1-2 record in bowl games
Coach 2
Year 1: 8-5
Year 2: 10-4
Year 3: 5-7
Year 4: 12-1
1-1 record in bowl games
Both coaches went 11-2 in their first season at their new school and finished the season ranked #5.

Here, guess this SEC coach from his first head coaching record at a far lesser school in a weaker conference:
Year 1: 4-7

Never finished better than 3rd in his division while at this school. No conference titles.
While it's not the best conference, winning games in the big XII is much more difficult than in Conference USA/AAC. This was also before Pickens started throwing millions at the Okie Lite athletic facilites to make them competitive.
