All of this really highlights how little the average fanbase knows about coaching football

From Bama fans and their Fax campaign to pressure our AD into hiring Mike DuBose because he was one of “Bear’s boys…” which resulted in the darkest decade in Bama sports history.

Tennessee fans torpedoing the hire of Greg Schiano because they convinced themselves that Jon Gruden was just aching to be the UT coach and their administration was too stupid to know it. This solidified generation long bottom dweller status.

And now Auburn fans, who were so disappointed in the hiring of Kevin Steele as opposed to a big name coach on every insider’s secret list, that they created the #StopTheSteele social media campaign, the depth of which has only been rivaled by the basketball memes. This resulted in possibly the worst dumpster fire in the SEC over the last decade. Allegations of Petrino style infidelity, the mistreatment of players, and now claims of blatant racism.

We just don’t know how to get out of our own way.

I just don’t get Auburn fans clamoring to keep the guy when it’s clear his recruiting is going to bring him under eventually, and that’s ignoring his ability to build relationships with at least a chunk of his players and staff members. It was a mistake to hire him, let’s move on.

I remember being so fricking pissed when we “botched” the Rich Rod hire. I had a very heated discussion with my dad about how shitty of a decision it was to “low ball” Rich Rod just to “beg an NFL a-hole to come be our coach.”

That was when I lost all hope and just accepted that we'd never win anything again. I accepted the fact that we were going to hire Jim Grobe or Paul Johnson. Then a fraternity brother kept telling us all that Saban was still in play and he had to leave the house because people were literally on the verge of kicking his arse because nobody wanted to hear that shite anymore

To be fair, the VOL fan base did their job. It’s not our fault Fulmer fricked it up and picked Pruitt over Mel Tucker.

I mean of all of them you guys are probably in the best spot. I don't think Heupel has a national title winning ceiling, but he proved last year he's got a pretty high floor. You can definitely work with that.

I think that was still a much better decision than Mel Tucker. I think MSU is about to be on the hook for Mel Tucker’s fat contract. UT wouldn’t have been able to fire him, because racism. Or whatever.

Agree - that contract after the following results....

- win @ Northwestern (3-9) by 17
- win vs Youngstown State (1AA) by 28
- win @ Miami (7-5) by 21
- win vs Nebraska (3-9) by 3 (OT)
- win vs Western Kentucky (9-5) by 17
- win @ Rutgers (5-8) by 18
- win @ Indiana (2-10) by 5
- win vs Michigan (12-2) by 4

......is one of the most insane things I've ever seen, in a sport that does tons of insane things.

He beat Michigan (in a game they were outgained by 160 yards), 2 average teams (Miami/WKU) and 5 dog turds. And they gave him $100M for it.

At least it was cut and dried for you guys fairly quickly.

Do you know how hard it has been since 2005 to go from Hate the hire/Love the hire/Fire the hire on an almost annual basis...WHILE winning two natty's along the way? If being Bi-Polar were contagious, I would've caught (and been cured) that shite multiple times.

Auburn fans still do not want Steele. Actually Harsin has gotten more support today since he was hired.

That was one depressing arse day. I think it was a Thursday and cold as frick in Houston. I remember the offer and the turn-down. I was like you, thinking that we were about to become the door mat of the SEC. It was also coincidently the day I discovered Bill King's show on Sirius radio which was way before F-bomb even left Birmingham.

Yea - I vividly remember walking back into the fraternity house from class, going to my room and turning the TV on the in background while I got some stuff out on my desk to study. Some other guys were in there sitting on the couch and all of a sudden they both were just like "You gotta be fricking kidding me".........and I turned around and CBS42 was confirming that RichRod wasn't coming back and was staying at WVU.

It felt like the culmination of all the shite we'd dealt with for the past 15 years just collapsed the ceiling. I just remember all of us being like this is finally it, the end. Accept who we are now - we're never going to even get close to being the Alabama that our parents remember.

Yep. Apparently having your own daughter pumped out by old rich men want won't get you more than 1 year of employment.

Can’t believe y’all haven’t mentioned the greatest halftime interview in CFB history

I was giddy at the the thought that y’all would end up settling for this guy after Saban decided to stick it out in Miami.

Now there’s a non-zero chance AU will end up with Joe Kines minus the lovable folksy patois

Also, I think coaches get way too much of the blame when a team is bad and way too much of the credit when a team is good.

Case in point, Joe Brady with 2019 LSU. The dude was looked upon as some kind of offensive genius because he happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Then he couldn't even make it two years as an NFL OC, the other end of the spectrum, he was blamed WAY TOO MUCH for the Panthers being bad.

I think there are very few cases when it's just painfully obvious that it's time for a coach to go, Ed Orgeron was a good example of that.

LOL - I didn't ever think there was a chance we kept Kines. I was pretty sure we were going to hire Jim Grobe, and possibly Paul Johnson.

I thought Grobe will do a nice little job, we'd go 8-4/9-3 most years and we at least wouldn't have a meltdown every 3 years. I'd completely lost hope of ever consistently beating Auburn or Tennessee again.

I loathe this reasoning like it’s childhood cancer. Okay, maybe not that bad but I still hate the hell out of it. “He’s someone that will get it.” If it’s Bama football, UK basketball, etc., odds are the right names get it. There are guys who are simply not cut out for it like Gillespie in Kentucky’s case, but you can’t limit yourself to some shortlist of names just because they’ll “get it.”

Pretty funny back to back in a NYT article I found when searching for Grobe/Alabama

FOOTBALL: COLLEGE ROUNDUP

Demon Deacons’ Coach Says He’ll Stay

By The Associated Press
Dec. 6, 2006

RODRIGUEZ MEETS WITH ALABAMA -- West Virginia Coach Rich Rodriguez met for 90 minutes with Alabama's athletic director yesterday but described their discussions as "informal," ESPN.com reported.

Rodriguez and the Alabama official, Mal Moore, met in New York, where both are attending the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame dinner.

Rodriguez is 49-24 in six seasons at West Virginia. He signed a three-year extension with the Mountaineers on June 24 and has six years left on his contract, which pays him about $1.1 million a year.

KELLY GETS STARTED AT CINCINNATI -- Brian Kelly said he expected to turn Cincinnati into a top-25 mainstay, win a Big East title right away and make sure his players graduate.

But before he gets started on that daunting to-do list, he has to figure out what to do about their bowl game.

Kelly, the Bearcats' new coach, arrived on campus and met with players Monday, a few hours after he accepted the job vacated by Mark Dantonio. Yesterday, he was introduced at a news conference that felt more like a pep rally: cheerleaders and the band were on hand, and the public was invited to attend and ask questions.

Kelly, who built Central Michigan into a Mid-American Conference champion in three years, promised similar results at Cincinnati.

"We're going to win a championship here right away," he said. "We're on a five-minute plan here. We have to win right away."

First, he has to decide how to get the Bearcats through the end of their season. Cincinnati went 7-5 under Dantonio, who was hired by Michigan State. The Bearcats will play Western Michigan in the International Bowl on Jan. 6 in Toronto. Defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi, who interviewed for the head coaching position, has been running the team since Dantonio left.

Kelly will leave Central Michigan before it plays in the Motor City Bowl on Dec. 26. He said he was not sure how big a role he would play in preparing his new team for its game.

"It's a very fluid situation now," he said. "I'm going to be here at Cincinnati. In terms of whether I'll be coaching on the field, that has to be determined."
