Yeah the engine remains on AA383 match up to the UPS even after hitting the ground.
Both suffered urbine disk failure. If the American failure happens 2-3 seconds later the result would've been terrible.

Blancolliro update vid. He pretty much times out how far down the runway when the fire bell. No chance of saving. Also brings up AA383.

Blancolliro update vid.
Tldw: He thinks the engine failed first, pylon failed, then engine separated.
It's close to AA191 ( due to the pylon failure) but is probably most similar to another American flight:383 in 2016.
For that flight, the engine blew up and pierced the fuel tank during takeoff setting the right wing on fire. They were able to get stopped and evacuated so no loss of life. The cause was a fan disks failure. The plane was a 767, but had the same engines the MD11 had (CF6)

NTSB briefing from today. Of note is they say they found fan blade pieces while walking both runways. Also says both recorders were found and downloaded all info. They'll listening to it tomorrow.

MD11 is still being used as a freighter mainly due to cargo capacity. It dwarfs everything but the 74 variants and 777F which is what makes the money. No need to change what isn't broke, and those things have long since paid for themselves.
I'm sure some MBA in Louisville have done the cost/benefit calculations of keeping the MD running vs buying brand new 777s, and given all the issues Boeing is having its probably for the best right now in the short term.
Fedex apparently isn't mothballing theres until 2032.

Damn near 80 free throws between both teams is a mockery.
These refs definitely bet on this game.

Best bet to get airborne and dump it into the Ohio River? Would that have even been feasible?
Not a pilot but probably would've been the the only feasible thing had they had a left wing. Not enough time.
Looking at Google maps the runway they were using takes you away from the river. You'd have stay airborne for a while to try it.

Came here to post this exact video. I’d been waiting on his response all day. Blancolirio is the best YouTube aviation incedent investigator.
I think he’s pretty dead on here. #1 separated and FOD’d out #2. Shitty situation. Even if #2 had kept running, what would have become of the fire on the left wing? Depending on what the engine took with it(shut off valves), there could be fuel and hydraulic fluid still being dumped on that fire. Perfect storm for structural failure later in flight. I think these guys were damned from the moment they hit V1.
My thoughts too. It almost makes me wonder if this plane had been a 757 (or any other twin engine really) would it have been able to get to air more even with the wing damage and fire( since those can get airborne one engine iirc). But a wing fire that bad isnt going to flyable for very long and probably wouldn't have been able to turn and land at an airport either imo.
Either slam into the sorting facility in front of you trying to stop or get pray you can ditch in a field and not a residential neighborhood. No win situation.

Yeah the pilots tried their best here.
Blancolliro ( another excellent air crash YouTuber and pilot) has an update on his channel
Link
In his video he points out the possible compressor stall on the rear engine thanks to all the FOD from the number one engine the first few seconds.

I was thinking (speculating) today this appears to be an absolute catastrophic engine failure like a NHRA engine blows up for it to just fall off after a fire.
Kinda like Southwest 1380 but on the takeoff roll.

NTSB says the left engine caught fire and detached in the update.
The left engine of a doomed UPS plane caught fire during takeoff and immediately detached, officials in Kentucky said Wednesday, leading to the horrific crash and deaths of at least nine people.
Investigators have recovered the cockpit flight recorder and the flight data recorder, National Transportation Safety Board member Todd Inman said, in hopes of finding out more about Tuesday's tragic accident just outside of Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.
CCTV footage shows the left engine detaching from the wing during takeoff, Inman told reporters.
"The plane lifted off and gained enough altitude to clear the fence at the end of runway 17 R. Shortly after clearing that fence, it made impact with structures and the terrain off of the airport property," Inman said.

Not really. Though they are essentially rebuilt DC-10s ( which were very problematic) MD- 11 have been relatively problem-free given flight hours flown. The last fatal incident in the world was 2016 and the last one from a U.S. carrier was 2009 and before that 1999.
Fedex and UPS put these things through the ringer over the years, but they are old girls at this point.

Phoenix probably then Minnesota Detroit then DC.
A couple of underrated bad cities are Charlotte ( no MLB) , New Orleans ( no MLB), and if Cleveland is getting mentioned then Miami has too. The Heat have largely been irrelevant since Lebron left, the Marlins are almost a shoe in for worst team in MLB every year, and the Dolphins have done nothing the last 30 years.

I'm so excited for this Spurs team this year. So many weapons
It's just one game but there is no reason we shouldn't aim to be top 5 in West.
