hard to recruit for defense in the b12. not enough bodies to go around.

Why would there be less defensive talent than offense? I realize that a lot of Big 12 players come from the state of Texas, and that Texas high schools more often have spread passing offenses now (but that's nationwide I think). A team could take some of those great players, though, and develop them on defense.

don't need elite offensive talent to have an elite offense, especially against middling defensive talent.

Not exactly answering your question but Kyler started very shaky (credit to Bama D). I think once he was hit hard, his confidence picked up but score was 21-0 and OU had zero net yards. That’s pretty hard on and D to get 3 possessions of 22 Bama plays on them before their offense had 1 first down.

AFTER 28-0, our D played good (for them). Downfield coverage was there but credit incredible catches by Bama for keeping it rolling.

My only complaint about the “let off the gas” & “mercy down” thought is Saban is smart enough with that lead to milk the clock rather than increasing OU possessions and increased likelihood of injuries.

A general answer to your question is most Texas high schools play 7 on 7 type football and we recruit more there than anywhere else. Doesn’t seem to effect Texas, TCU as much. Maybe because their offenses are more ball control.

Yes nomandland our defense did play well after the onslaught. Problem is if we are being truthful Bama had to run the clock their defense was gasped but it actually helped out in us getting closer. If they keep on passing we were going to have a hard time to stop them. Even with Bama running the ball we couldn’t get them at the los, by the time we hit them they was already past the los. We had no shot of stopping them with that defensive scheme. Recruiting isn’t the only problem, coaching is the main problem.

Speaking of which, why do most Texas high schools play 7 on 7 football? I am assuming most of the schools have enough participants to play the traditional 11 players on a team. In most states, even 1A schools have enough players for that.

I thought they played great for as long as it was needed, quarter and a half. Afterwards just good enough to win the rest of the way.

Wtf is this idiot talking about? OU has had 3 top 10 classes and has mostly 4 and 5 star players on defense. The issue has been coaching and mike stoops “rugby tackle” philosophy that has not worked.

with a google search, I have learned that most 7 on 7 teams are not high school teams, but extra curricular "tournament" type teams. Kind of like AAU, but evidently nobody associated with it likes that or wants that, for obvious reasons.

A review of the rules makes it pretty clear why it affects and impacts defense and development of defensive players, and I would add down linemen on both sides of the ball.

If you are interested, check it out. Official Texas State 7on7 Rules

7 on 7 is a practice technique, not actual # of players.

Edit:
Ok it’s both. 7 on 7 drills have existed for many years before 7-7 team play & have been used by Texas high schools as a skill player practice in the summer.

edit since you did. Well yeah. 7 on 7 practice has been around even since I was a kid, but these are 7 on 7 teams, or actually, if I read the rules correctly on another website, in some leagues the offense will have 6 and defense has 7.

I wish I knew that answer. We won the NC in 2000 because of defense and had some good ones through 2008. The current defense looks like they’re not coached at all in many scenarios. Granted, we don’t have talent for a top 10 defense, but we should at least be in the 30s. It is beyond frustrating and I hope we clean house on that side of the ball and start fresh with a new defensive staff.

Bama played well defensively. We had some costly mistakes when we stopped them in the 2nd half that allowed OU second chances. And regardless of their previous opposition that was the best offense in the last 15 years atleast. You can’t give them second chances. Overall bama still made things very difficult on Kyler. Barely over 50 percent.

Yep, next year will be a step back. However, we signed the #1 QB in the country and hopefully he pans out for 2020 and beyond.

Thanks for the input.

I remember when Gene Stallings was at Alabama, a lot of UA fans felt like he pretty often put more of the best players on defense. Do you think Riley might still put the majority of great skill position players on offense, or be willing to give up some to develop a better defense? I only ask because I remember Stallings' ways, and evidently Riley is an offense first kind of coach as Stallings was to defense. Speaking of which, if Auburn was in your conference, I'm not sure that Gus Malzahn would give 2 shits about defense. On the flip side, Nick Saban's head would probably explode.

I have to hope that everything is on the table. We have at least 2 5* receivers for 2019, so maybe they will look at some position shifts. The scenario you described is exactly how Bob Stoops built the team in 1999.

Oklahoma had, statistically, the most efficient offense in modern college football history.

Considering the circumstances of the game (us jumping to a big lead) I think we had a B to B+ defensive effort overall.
