I believe each NWS office surveys the damage in its forecast territory. Here is the NWS Jackson, MS storm report page...

My husband went to the funeral for the girl from Decatur today.
Her father is one of his employees.
He said the sadness was overwhelming.
She was scheduled to graduate this month and was about to be married.
He said the parents are barely functioning.
This was supposed to be the most joyous month in her life - getting her college degree and getting married.
And instead, her parents buried her today.
It makes me cry just to imagine how her parents and family must feel.

Okay....is that Hackelburg tornado the same one that hit Smithville, MS? Or is that two different F-5 tornadoes?
The same tornado destroyed Smithville, Hackelburg, and Phil Campbell. They don't get much mention in the media, but I believe all three towns were completely destroyed.

Okay...thanks. I got to see Smithville in person today. It is completely destroyed. It was eerie looking. When I was able to get back on 78/I-22....I saw where what looked like the same tornado crossed the highway in Alabama. There were trees tore up everywhere in that area. It was just weird to see the path in Smithville, and then see the same path 45mins down the road in a totally different spot.

Those towns were completely obliterated. I can't help but wonder if they haven't found all the fatalities yet.

They haven't even found them all in Tuscaloosa - so, unfortunately, they probably haven't in the other towns either...

I'm hoping that cleanup and search efforts go alright today with the rain in town. I know that it's going to make their jobs a lot harder.

Talked with a customer of mine yesterday. He went up near the Shoal Creek Tornado to take some supplies. Talked to some folks that were in the path. It hit on the Etowah side of Neely Henry and said it looked like plains, instead of mountains with trees now. Said he saw a mobile home roof in the lake, and was corrected, it was the entire mobile home, along with a submerged school bus nearby. That area was hit really bad and took out nearly the entire valley for those familiar with that area.

Just heard a hysterical AP report on the radio about how "much of Alabama" is under curfew and the Guard has been activated to quell the looting. Any of you guys seeing rampant looting going on?

I know that all of the disaster area is under curfew in Tuscaloosa. 8 pm - 6 am. The curfew was extended to at least Wednesday or Thursday. I heard about looting going on right after the storm but I never actually saw any looting. I honestly think that it's more of a precautionary thing so that looting DOESN'T occur!

13 arrested in Tuscaloosa for looting since storm

“Individuals in the county are very independent,” Sexton said. “If I was considering looting, I don't think I'd want to go to the county. I've seen a number of persons armed out there.”

Not seen any, only heard about it and the story yesterday was the only confirmed case I've actually seen about it. It's like anything else though.. 1000 stories about the right thing being done is shrugged about, and 1 instance of bad is blown up and garners too much attention. Just glad they caught the 4 that they did and hope an example is made of them. Folks have lost family, friends, homes, everything dear to them. Anyone that would further hurt them deserves the full brunt of punishment.
eta- crap.. just saw your edit MJ. I hope every single person arrested for this gets their pictures posted everywhere they live and in a very long and prominent way.

speaking of the looting. a clerk decided he would stay at his gas station he owned the other night, one of the looters decided he would break the curfew and rob the gas station. the clerk was waiting as soon as he broke in he had three shot gun shells in him. the looter was killed and the clerk is fine. he has the right to protect his property and will go un charged.

Well, I'm back after nearly a week without electricity. I really haven't seen any photos of the destruction yet.

Yeah, thanks. We didn't have any damage, but there's plenty in the area.

A little bit of encouraging news. The official Alabama death toll has been lowered from 250 to 236. I have no frickin idea how 14 people are somehow counted as dead when they aren't but I guess that answers my earlier question on why they are being so careful on the count. Seriously though, how do you manage to get THAT wrong?
