Did you not watch things last year? SMU lost to Clemson. Clemson gets the AQ spot, SMU does not drop, and Alabama ends up out.
I think it's kinda dumb that you can't be punished for losing conference championship games, but it certainly didn't start with Alabama this year. And in the case of SMU, there weren't 3 other conference teams sitting at home because they played weaker schedules and didn't make the game.
