Alabama fans, tell me about Tosh Lupoi

Aside from Saban, I know that he's the best recruiter on your staff and has been called the best assistant coach recruiter dating back to his days at Cal and Washington.
How has he been during his first year as defensive coordinator?
Assuming Malzahn hangs on, I think Auburn might make a run at him next year.

Great recruiter obviously.
Defense has gotten better as the year has gone on but I don’t think he’s anywhere close to being ready to take over a premier P5 program and have success. I think another 3-4 years of DC at an elite school would work wonders.

As what? He's not leaving to go be a DC somewhere else. As head coach I wouldnt think he's anywhere near ready for that.

Great recruiter. I think when he leaves, he wants it to be for a head coaching job on the west coast.

The last two Alabama defensive coordinators have been hired by SEC schools.
He'll be 38 years old next year along with 4 years of experience in Alabama's program.
Kirby was only 40 when he was hired by Georgia.

I would he make a lateral , at best, move to Auburn? Alabama can pay him way more money to stay in the same role.
He's probably waiting for a head coaching gig in the PAC-12.

He’s definitely all-that as a recruiter.
I’m not yet sold on him as a coordinator, but there are pretty lofty standards at Bama for the DC job.
Over Saban’s tenure Pruitt was by far the best DC. Kirby was very good but his defenses had the tendency to give up 3rd and forever and struggle mightily with mobile QB’s.

Pruitt grew up in our system and had been a very good DC at 3 powerhouse programs. Tosh has been a DC for 1 year at 1 program. And the Pruitt hire at Tennessee was definitely unexpected a possible reach.

That would be the dumbest move in Auburn history to take a HC with two years of DC experience only. He will likely take a HV job at a smaller school in a coupe of years and work his way up. Even if he is 45 when he gets his first job people act like that’s old. He’d have 20 plus years of coaching left in him at least assuming he was a decent HC.

The reason Kirby struggled against mobile QBs was our recruiting model. We got lighter, leaner, and faster across the front 7. We adapted with the times. It wasn’t Kirby’s fault. He was easily our best DC. He had more trust from Saban than anyone on staff by a wide margin. We just needed to get away from the big fat NG types and the Upshaw types on the edge.

For the record Dabo Swinney was a young coach in his 30's who had NEVER been an offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator. He was a WR coach that was an elite recruiter (Clemson's recruiting coordinator).
I don't think being a offensive or defensive coordinator for almost a decade makes or breaks you.

Love Tosh as an assistant but if you are talking about HC after Gus, Auburn will be in serious trouble if y’all get that far down the pecking order

And is one the most unique stories in modern CFB history. Also probably would have been fired after 3 years at Auburn for his performance.
