A fact that is not commonly known to people outside of Texas, and even in the state you have to be somewhat well read on state politics to understand is the fact that UT needed the money from the Longhorn network in order to continue to advance as an elite university. Gov Perry in his last term was very hostile toward higher ed, particularly UT, basically said "all higher ed does is produce a bunch of libs and lib professors who dont actually do any work"
So funding for UT began to be cut, Perry wanted UT to increase funds by having more online classes and expanding the size of UT and by lowering acceptance requirements.
UT Pres Powers fought this for the most part but Perry appointed all the regents, so his hands were somewhat tied.
However they basically realized that they could use the revenue that football generates to continue to advance the university academically, even with the feud going with Perry.
Granted its a lot more complicated that this, but those are some cliff notes that shed some light on the situation.

Y'all are both pretty unbearable.
Well, maybe. But we're no different from other SEC fans when their teams are having success. Texas fans think they're "entitled". We Bama fans KNOW that Kentucky, Vanderbilt or Mississippi State can beat us. TAMU fans might not have learned that yet. No, Bama fans have not come CLOSE to the sense of entitlement that Texas fans have. Probably, because we're in the SEC.

Definitely some truth to it, but its the same argument Wall Street makes for executive salaries.
Powers says we want the best professors we can get, therefor we have to pay them well and not stick them in a room with 400 freshman.
Just like how Blankfein doesnt sit in a cubicle at Goldman till 2 am for 200 grand like my friend who are analyst.

1. Most of their fans know absolutely nothing about their team other than the final score of games and maybe three players' names.
quote:I guess living in Baton Rouge for the last decade and in Louisiana for my entire life hasn't brought me into contact with many LSU fans because I don't know a single one who takes recent success for granted or who thinks that LSU will never have a down period.
2. They're convinced that recent success will be sustained forever and they'll never have a down period.

3. If said down period does hit, they go into an absolute rage and want every single coach fired and every single player benched.
You're eaten up with it, quite badly.

All SEC fans are better than University of Texas Fans.
If they won the National Championship every year and were ranked higher than Yale academically, their opinion of themselves would still be too high. They're a prideful bunch. But, as we know, pride comes just before the fall. And, autumn is upon us.

I have been in Houston for 2 years and travel the state pretty well. Horn fans have been very quite.
I see more LSU and AM gear around town.

Texas fans are arrogant about their state and their football program. Alabama fans are just arrogrant about their football program.

Revenue is not shared equally in the sec. We make it close but if bama's bowl payout is more than vandy's then bama will get more money. Not by much but still more.

I mean, those guys are brutal. The SEC has ALWAYS shared the wealth. Vandy gets as much as Bama, Florida, Georgia and LSU in revenue from the Conference. Just from what I've seen, even though Bama fans catch so much heat on this board, Texas fans are the worst in the nation. I mean REALLY, just starting the LHN was an act of arrogance.
Also, I am not seeing the connection between the above quote and the fans. Fans don't dictate revenues or the LHN.

If we are making generalizations: A. Insecurity. B. Arrogance. Because of arrogance and insecurity, they try to stack the deck in their favor whenever possible. If there is a level playing field, then they are uncomfortable with competition.
Here are some other observaations.
1. Texas fans act like they are God's gift when their team is doing well, and act as if football doesn't exist when they aren't. Dish it out but can't take it. (See Austin Radio last year.)
2. Texas fans think that they would have won the MNC had Colt McCoy not been hurt
3. Texas fans think that the reason VY is not a starter in the NFL is b/c Jeff Fisher has a personal vendetta against the greatest QB of all time
4. Similar for COlt McCoy, but more reasonable rearding his shortcomings
5. Texas fans can't talk Xs and Os, because their coach can't talk Xs and Os.
6. Texas fans can't wrap their head around how it is possible for them to have top 3 recruits every year, but have nothing to show for it since 2005.
7. It has taken longer than most fanbases for them to realize that coaching might be the problem
8. The sunshine pumping is so great that it creates delusion, which then creates an inability to cope with adversity.

just starting the LHN was an act of arrogance.
It was an act of stupidity, bred by, and a mere symptom of, institutionalized arrogance. Thank God for it, though. Best thing that ever happened to A&M.
Here's a recap of what's happened over the past 5-10 years to illustrate the folly of institutionalized arrogance:
1. A&M adds an HD jumbotron
2. longhorns add a ridiculously large jumbotran to where it gets the nickname Godzillatron, then Adzillatron because the outside edges are nothing but advertisements.
3. Reporter asks longhorn AD DeLoss Dodds if the new jumbotron is "keeping up with the Joneses" to which Dodds says longhorns "are the Joneses"
4. Big 12 sucks. Dodds acts like a dick (see above)
5. Dodds secretly starts negotiating a merger with the Pac10 without consulting A&M
6. Missouri flirts with the Big 10 cuz the longhorns suck
7. Pac 10 plan revealed, Baylor left out.
8. Baylor shits pants
9. Colorado, worried about Baylor pants shitting and political posturing, joins the Pac 10 unilaterally
10. Aggies (specifically, Admin. Gene Stalling) say eff you to pac 10 plan. We want SEC. You longhorns can come with us if you don't like you situation, not the other way around. Don't tell Daddy what to do.
11. Nebraska leaves the Big Twatever because longhorns and the Big Twatever sucks, leaving the Big Twatever at 10 teams
12. Pac 10 deal abandoned because longhorns are shitting pants at the thought of Daddy getting to leave them with all the kids and go to a much better conference with better exposure and no influence from longhorn cheating and bullshite
13. Baylor and other Big Twatever left-behinds agree to pay Daddy extra money to not go to the SEC
14. LHN is announced. The contract calls for more than 2 games on LHN. Other Big Twatever schools pissed
15. Longhorns try to get high school games on LHN as a recruiting advantage. Other Big Twatever schools pissed. The NCAA says it's a violation, puts a stop to it.
16. Aggie President gets a copy of the LHN/ESPN agreement showing that they are never going to participate in a conference network and the parties will use best efforts to get as many conference games as possible on the LHN, taking money out of the Big Twatever distribution pot and keeping it all for longhorns and ESPN, at the expense of the other conference members.
17. A&M President tells Dodds et al to frick off and accepts the invitation to join the SEC
18. Baylor shite pants again. Threatens lawsuit.
19. Dodds and Longhorns try to belittle A&M to get us to us to change our mind about the SEC, stating that U of H would be a good replacement if the Aggies leave
20. Aggies don't bite on the troll, but flip it around and say "SEE!!! WE CAN LEAVE WITHOUT DAMAGING THE CONFERENCE. REPLACEMENTS ARE AVAILABLE AND WILLING."
21. Longhorns still can't give A&M credit for being a power and stick to the "A&M is worthless" mantra.
22. Dodds et al threaten to never play the Aggies again.
23. Aggies say "we will play the game anytime and anywhere" which is code for "frick off, butthurt little twat"
24. Longhorns try to go to the B1G, fail
25. Longhorns try to go to the ACC, fail
26. Longhorns try to get Notre Dame to join Big Twatever, fail
27. Longhorns try to get Florida State to join the Big Twatever, fail
28. Longhorns try to get Clemson to join the Big Twatever, fail
29. Longhorns get their 4th choice, TCU to join the Big Twatever, adding zero to the conference
30. Baylor celebrates being saved
31. OU, pissed about the LHN, starts flirting with the Pac 10 again
32. Baylor starts getting nervous, start's threatening A&M with lawsuit again
33. Missouri accepts SEC invitation
34. Baylor shits pants again, Ken Starr goes to D.C. trying to get the U.S. Gov to stop Daddy from leaving
35. Longhorns get WVU (1000 miles away and a shitty school) to join the Big Twatever, after ridiculing the Aggies for travel distances in the SEC and insulting the SEC's academic reputation
36. Baylor is gleeful
37. Longhorns claim that TCU and WVU are "upgrades"
38. Baylor joins in on the "upgrade" bullshite now that they've been saved from relegation to Conference USA
40. Dodds tells everybody that the SEC doesn't own any TVs in Texas but "has a sliver down the East Texas side"
41. Longhorns and Baylor homos claim that "A&M left the State of Texas"
42. A&M rustles jimmies with SEC Country billboard campaign all over, including Austin and Waco
43. LHN launches as huge disaster with no content nor carriage, longhorn fans pisses, Aggies (and everybody else) laugh asses off
44. ESPN College GameDay announces it will attend A&M's first SEC game v. Florida in College Station, longhorn crying commences
45. Butthurt longhorn fans put up a billboard in Gainesville, FL attempting to run ridiculous smack at Florida in an effort to make A&M look bad
46. A&M is on national TV every single week but one in 2012
47. Nobody sees the longhorns on TV for the first few weeks and regionally thereafter
48. A&M beats #1 Alabama before rear-record-breaking national TV audience
49. A&M reaches the Top 10 in the in BCS
50. Longhorns replace A&M with TCU for the Thanksgiving game, claims it will be epic, everybody else laughs at them
51. Unranked TCU beats the effing longhorns on their only nationally televised home game, everybody laughs
52. JFF wins Heisman, longhorns and Baylor cries
53. Sumlin is a coach of the year candidate, longhorns cry
54. Joekel wins the Outland
55. Aggies have 3 players on the 1st team All American. The entire Big Twatever gets only 1 player on 1st team
56. Cotton Bowl v OU (co-champs of Big Twatever), A&M lays a corn-fed beatdown on the landthieves, longhorns cry
57. Aggies finish Top 5 for the first time in 57 years (a talking point the longhorns had used quite frequently, now lost), longhorns cry
58. Aggies beat the frick out of the longhorns in recruiting
59. Big Twatever flirts with Louisville
60. Louisville joins the ACC instead
61. Sports Illustrated claims no other conference addition was as impaction on a league's profile as the SEC's move to add A&M, SI give Slive #1 rating
62. Aggies announces record income and plans for $450M stadium, longhorns cry, then announce another expansion to keep up with Daddy, again
63. The SEC agrees to huge conference network
64. Longhorns announce that they will air the 2013 Ole Miss on LHN, proving A&M was right to leave
65. Longhorns game vs. New Mexico State gets a zero television rating, longhorns cry
66. Ole Miss game is not far ahead in TV ratings, longhorns get a beating, cry
67. The most watched longhorn game to date is that beatdown they took at the hands of BYU
So, I would say that we have pretty much owned those arrogant fricktards for a long, long, LONG time. This is what happens when stupid, arrogant people are in decision-making roles.

First of all, amazing post.
To clarify for SEC folks, this was scandalous because the league previously agreed that conference networks would get 1 football game. Then the LHN contract comes out and ESPN put in the contract that they push for two LHN football games and the local high school football championship game. Texas signed a contract to do it behind everyone's back and without asking permission first.
It got worse too. When the LHN stumbled out the gate, not only did they get a second game but they got a conference game on the LHN. Normally this would be impossible as Fox owns all the Big 12 Tier 2 rights (so all non-marquee conference games like vs Kansas), but ESPN made a deal with Fox so the LHN could guaranteed getting that game (aka Fox passes on it and it falls to the LHN) and in return Fox got to put one of the marquee Big 12 games on its main Fox channel.
In fact that is a regular deal now to keep the LHN afloat. This year the LHN got THREE games and a conference game. In trade Fox gets to broadcast Texas's Thanksgiving game. Their crown jewel.
Think how fricked up that is- not only is the conference bent towards Texas and the LHN, but ESPN trades good games for shite with Fox to keep it afloat. The LHN is subsidized by the ENTIRE Big 12 contract like a leach. No other team network in the Big 12 is given any opportunity like that to trade for games.
Even Bama couldn't get away with that shite. That is why we here.

This one is out of order. The "launch" happened in August 2011. A&M accepting the invitation and the Baylor fagetry happened in September, Missouri joined in November.
