Auburn's Masters of Accountancy is one of the best in the country.
Engineering may be what Auburn wants to be known for, but we are an average engineering school

Auburn is much more famous for their vet school and engineering. These are areas in which research dollars are more heavily spent - and one could argue that on the basis of that alone, AAU would probably be much more interested in looking at Auburn for membership inclusion than Alabama. That in no way infers that Auburn is a superior institution compared to Alabama... only that their research efforts are much more visible.
Research dollars are spent in those areas, but the AAU doesn't consider grant money from the USDA, and while engineering plays a big role the overwhelming drivers of AAU status basically 3 things:
1. Research Doctorates - the number of grad students conducting research.
2. Medical school (which Auburn is getting correct?) -
3. Federal dept/agency Research - a majority of which is medical science based (NIH, CDC, DHHS).

Florida is good in lots of areas. Well rounded like the athletic program I suppose.

The Arkansas MFA in Creative Writing program is really solid and has a great reputation.
Just as a point of reference, Ole Miss does as well, and two of their current faculty (Beth Ann Fennelly and Tom Franklin) are graduates of the UofA MFA program.

Those are just the grad programs. UF is pretty good at most things. Our health campus is certainly one of the best: med school, pharm school, nursing school, PA school, vet school.
Our engineering program is pretty damn good as is our ag program. Only fields that aren't as great is our performing and fine arts (which FSU is much better at) and our law school, which is still improving.

Missouri State was known for Business and a Teachers school. They have made a push in last decade for Public Affairs.

Why is LSU's #1 World ranked CIA program not discussed more on this board?
This is a degree and career, if maneuvered correctly, can nab you as much pay as many CPA's, Lawyers, Doctors, so forth.
#1 in World

This. We have a damn good engineering dept. I'd put it up against Auburn's any day of the week.

I believe the South and especially the SEC gets a bum rap when it comes to academics.
From perusing all the posts in this thread, it would seem that we would hold our own with many of the other public schools in the country (esp. A&M and Florida, but every SEC school has certain curricula, programs, and schools they excel in and/or are nationally ranked in.)
And I would think Vandy would compare with most private institutions in the country.

Lot of schools outside the south focus a lot more on research than what they do in the classroom. Places like Cal, Michigan, Virginia, Washington, etc.. Here Research and Development expenditures
Texas A&M is one of the best research universities in the country

rating A&M's school of business higher than the Wharton School at UPenn is a crock of shite. you can roll with it but it is bogus. probably done by an aggie grad. businessinsider.com sucks.

I can name a few members of the faculty that I'd be shocked if Alabama had anyone that held the same level of prestige. In Mechanical Engineering there is Nels Madsen, who helped develop the motion capture technology used in the Lord of the Ring series and others, and David Bevly, whose work with controls and self driving vehicles is probably top 3 in the world. He also personally beings in like 5 million a year in research grants for his students.
