How has ND not been an AAU member?

So both Miami and USF got it before FSU.

Also, Nebraska was a member when they were invited by the Big 10 in 2010. Then they got kicked out in the spring of 2011 before joining.

Georgia meets requirements, but you have to be voted in by 3/4 of the current members. Georgia Tech and Emory have friends.

FWIW, UF's former president (Bernie Machen) supported UGA joining.

What are the requirements to join?

R1 Carnegie Classification (all SEC schools have this)

Comprehensive university (offering bachelors, graduate and doctoral degrees) - all SEC have this

NSF Research Expenditures at a high level (USDA Research is secondary - it's how Nebraska and Iowa State got kicked out) - Georgia and Kentucky are the next two up from the SEC.

Number of PhDs granted (Hello Arizona State and USF) - Again, Georgia is one of highest non-AAU.

Invitation by a majority of current members - Georgia has no problem getting this

3/4 of members support addition - Here's where Georgia fails somehow.

2/3 vote needed to expel. Five schools have been expelled in 122 year history.

Yes, Georgia has been brought up for candidacy several times. They can't get the 3/4 support. Florida and Vanderbilt always bring Georgia. It's a travesty that UGA is not in this group.

Here's the full detailed requirements: LINK

Could you image someone having to travel from Miami to Washington for a college football game? One of the most absurd things I've ever heard.

USC and UCLA will have to travel to Rutgers and Maryland for softball games in the new Big 10.

Big 10 wants Florida. They require AAU. They aren't going to poach Florida from the SEC. They now have two options, and they aren't taking USF. Miami to the Big 10 might happen.

A lot of it depends on whether the medical school is attached to the university itself, or a separate entity.

University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) performs around $170 million in research annually.

The medical school is a separate entity and does that much research or more itself, but is not included in the University of Arkansas statistics.

It goes that way for a lot of rankings that factor in research dollars. If you count the funding for your medical school campus, even if it located an hour away from the main campus, you'll rank higher than you should.

Here's some data:

LINK

Looking at University of Arkansas, if the Medical School was lumped in with the University of Arkansas (like OU and Mizzou), Arkansas would rank right there with them.

The UA Medical School actually ranks higher in research than the main campus in Fayetteville.

Some of the minutiae of the rankings with big public universities depends on the organizational structure more than anything else.

That's why Nebraska got booted, their medical school campus moved to Omaha.

AAU is an overrated snob society. Dartmouth just got in a couple of years ago. Ag schools don’t get credit for those research dollars. Having a Medical School makes it much easier to get in. Nebraska got thrown out because their medical school isn’t in Lincoln and didn’t count.
