AAU membership is a requirement for the Big Ten, for what it's worth.

Arizona State
Miami
Notre Dame
South Florida

UCRiverside and George Washington were also added.

Nebraska lost its AAU membership and remains in Big Ten. All other Big Ten schools are members. Vanderbilt, Florida, Missouri and Texas A&M are the only SEC members in the AAU. Former SEC members Georgia Tech and Tulane and future SEC member Texas are amongst the now 69 members of the nation's most prestigious collegiate consortium.

Power 5 + AAU

SEC
-----
Vanderbilt
Florida
Missouri
Texas A&M

Big 12
------
Texas
Kansas

Pac 12
-------
Colorado
Utah
Arizona
Arizona State
Washington
Oregon
Stanford
Cal
UCLA
USC

ACC
------
Virginia
Duke
UNC
Miami
Pittsburgh

Big Ten
-------
All but Nebraska (member when joined Big 10)

All that R&D spending yet the Big Ten hasn't found a way to make its athletes more competitive with the SEC? Crazy.

There is a theory that the Big Ten wants to go into Florida. Miami gives them an opportunity to do that.

Add Washington and Oregon then Miami and Notre Dame?

Add Miami and kick out Nebraska? Look at Colorado or Kansas if Notre Dame doesn't want to come? Can the SEC give them Missouri?

This is an interesting play for South Florida. USF and Buffalo are now the only public G5s that are AAU. Rice and Tulane are the private G5s.

I really need to look into how Oregon is AAU. They do not have a medical school, an engineering school, and they aren't land grant. How are they meeting eligibility with none of those? Most schools have 2/3 or all three.

I’m actually surprised ND wasn’t already on there.

Not that it’s a bad school or anything, but I always assumed ASU was a party school, degree mill. Isn’t at around 50k students?

I’m sure it has been discussed previously, but how is Georgia not in the AAU?

Georgia meets requirements, but you have to be voted in by 3/4 of the current members. Georgia Tech and Emory have friends.

That's it. That's the explanation.

2/3 vote can kick you out. Two charter members have been kicked out. Nebraska was in for 102 years when they were removed. Iowa State was removed in 2022 after 60 years in the AAU.

Not always, but AAU is often affiliated with medical universities and medical research.

It isn't necessarily an indicator of the rest of the university.

Considering the state of higher education these days this AAU rating is extremely overrated!!!

It is. I've always thought that any P5 public school is "fine" at bare minimum, like obviously Texas Tech and WVU aren't great in terms of USNWR and similar rankings but you could do a lot worse if you grow up in those states and want to go to a public university, but AAU has nothing to do with undergrad prestige and instead is largely built on doctoral spending/research and development.

Stupid. So we’re supposed to believe Oregon, USF, and Missouri are more prestigious academic institutions than Georgia and Georgia Tech?

It's all based on research. The foundation for membership is R1 classification, which every SEC school has.

Where it is relevant here is that it is a requirement for Big Ten membership. Notre Dame and Miami now have AAU membership. I think they will add those two + Washington and Oregon and go to 20 soon.

Georgia Tech is in, and I would consider Mizzou and Georgia fairly close. Like I said above, Georgia is being left out purely because of politics. Tech and Emory have a group that will keep them out forever.

Oregon is a strange member. No med School, no engineering school and not a land grant. South Florida has a large medical school in an urban setting and a good engineering school. Those two will add up research grants.

They are struggling for membership dues if they are adding ASU. University of Phoenix is next

Traditionally, the Georgia Board of Regents managed a striated approach to higher education.
Georgia Tech was for engineering (UGA wasn't allowed an engineering school to compete for the longest time).
Georgia College was for medical (other universities were not allowed to compete against that specialty).

Things have changed the past 15-20 years. But some of these schools have been in education for 150-200 years. It is difficult for a school to be elite at something new out of the blue.

You can "blame" politics. It is just how things were done in Georgia (to my knowledge, the board of regents weren't doing anything to favor Emory. Everything that Emory has become is because Emory has earned it. Private schools are like that).

Could you image someone having to travel from Miami to Washington for a college football game? One of the most absurd things I've ever heard.

I was always under the impression that if you did not have an on-campus med school it was pretty hard to be a member unless you were big time engineering school. Only a few SEC schools have an on-campus med school and most are in the organization.

Does a school get more research money if it is a member? Other than being able to say you are a member of the club what else does it mean?
