I used to think this until this past off season. He is still more likely to correct it in 2027 than Jimbo would have in similar situation, but Elko made the kind of hires and personal decisions after signing new contract that some coaches make when too comfortable with job security and with guaranteed money coming in. Sometimes right after they promote people they shouldn’t and wouldn’t have done before the new contract, but sometimes they just don’t care as much as before the contract.

It was obvious even last season that even with a good OL, a running game, and 2 quality WRs that Reed had tendencies to play just good enough and just bad enough to keep both teams in the game. Against good defenses that didnt have to over commit to stopping the run he was below average. This season the line sucks, they can’t run the ball, aren’t as good at WR, and to replace their OC they promoted their WR coach that no team in over 20 years of coaching wanted as OC before Elko making every defense relatively good enough to make Reed look below average.

Reed then ran his mouth about LSU, and instead of setting him straight Elko put up with him running his mouth about Texas as well. They inflated Reed’s ego and helped him become lazy and arrogant instead of forcing him to improve by bringing in a good and experienced QB/OC coach and some competition at QB. They have zero experience behind Reed almost like they thought bringing in competition was going to hurt his feelings.
