A UGa Win and Alabama still making the Playoffs: Chaos for the P5 Conferences

This is a unique year where thanks to Notre Dame being a virtual lock for the playoffs is creating a chaos scenario should UGA beat Alabama and 2 SEC schools make the tournament again. I can't see a Bama team that has beat every team they have played this year by more than 20 points being left out unless politics get in the way.

Does anyone think that 3 Power 5 Conference Commissioners will sit around watching the playoffs with no representation without calling for expansion should this occur?

I don't think when the playoff's was designed that such a scenario could actually happen but here we are.

Totally agree, and I'm hoping for it.

No way the other 3 P5 conferences sit around and watch as 2 non conference champs make the playoffs while they sit at home.

It would be the quickest way for expanding the playoffs and I'm all for it.

frick 'em. I hope they're left out. Be better at what you do, and you won't be left out.

I mean be better than 12-1 conference champs (if this scenario happens)? That's a damn good year. 12-1 conference champs should be seen in most cases as superior to 12-1 non champs. I understand if Bama makes it this year for sure if they lose this weekend, but doesn't that tell us they aren't the best team? Losing on a neutral site to me says they aren't the best team in the country, so them not being in wouldn't leave the "best team" out.

Edit: To me, a conference championship game loser should not be in the playoffs in most scenarios. To me, the goal of the playoffs is to make sure you aren't potentially leaving out the best team in the country.

If my team doesn't win a neutral site game against another team in December, then how can I say I'm the best team in the country one month later?

Expanding the playoffs only makes it easier for Alabama to get in

A blow out loss to Purdue, more than anything, certainly says a team isn’t the best in the nation.

If Alabama loses on Saturday, they are still objectively better than OU and O$U

They might not be seen as THE best, but they are still top 4 and it's not even debatable.

12-1 conference champs seems to be the criteria to make the playoffs most years.

The point, which obviously flew way over your head, is it's not going to sit well with P5 conferences watching non conference champions with the same record consistently get in over them.

This is about expanding the playoff, which will happen sooner than later if this keeps happening.

It's a good thing IMO.

Lets look at last year. A team (Alabama) who did not even win their division beat two conference champions (Clemson - ACC) (Georgia - SEC) in the playoffs.

Those conference championships didn't mean shite.

Will the Gump mulligan extend to the SEC championship game as well? I remember in the sane times of you not winning your confrence championship means you were out of the picture. Time to bring back the BCS.

Which is exactly why those championship games are dead men walking if Alabama loses and still gets in this year.

CCG losers should not be in.

Being left out of the CCG on a technicality is different than losing the game.

I would be disappointed if any CCG makes it in.

Getting your fudge packed by a 6-6 Purdue at any location...home, away, or neutral, to me says you aren't even one of the 6 best teams in the country.

It's never been "the criteria'.

Besides...

1. all conferences aren't created equal.
2. Notre Dame. You can't include them in the playoffs at all if you are going to insist on the CCG as a criteria. Why should Alabama or Clemson risk losing this weekend when Brian Kelly gets to sit at home on the couch?

If Bama beats uga and loses the first round of the playoff, should they go to the finals because they are still probably one of the top 2 teams?

No.

Some games mean more. A CCG is one of those games.

Control your destiny. Win and you are in.

Can you point me to the rule where it says the committee has to put in only conference champions?

I agree with you 100%. The Conference Champion is supposed to be one of those items factored into the decision but if you want the "4 best teams" rather than the "most deserving" I still say Bama is one of those 4 unless UGa just blows them off the field which is unlikely.

It doesn't have to be a rule.
I never said it did.
