I was only 10 when the Ole Miss thing happened but what I do remember about it was that it was largely orchestrated. It could have happened pretty much anywhere but I suppose Ole Miss was the target because even then, they had that "elitist" persona that made them an easy bulls eye. It fit Robert Kennedy's agenda and it certainly met Ross Barnett's. He was a known segregationist but he was clearly grandstanding with his speech. As I recall, he negotiated a settlement after it was clear that he had lost but was more concerned about getting out with his reputation being more important than the real aftermath of the violence. There were more agitators that stirred the thing from out of state as there were from within. In the huge scheme of things, Mississippi gets a black eye from this when it would have never happened had it not been orchestrated, as I said. Birmingham church bombings, Selma and Montgomery, Detroit riots, Watts riots, Boston busing riots all were much larger in deaths, injuries and costs but Mississippi gets the racist monaker when in reality, racism is everywhere; white/black, black/white, white/hispanic, etc., etc.

I didn't watch it because I saw Coach Coon had posted it but my opinion of Ole Miss changed with Nutt's firing.

I have never found someone from Ole Miss I ever liked. They were all such arrogant arse holes.......
I am glad a lot of Ole Miss posters are here on the SEC rant. It is entertaining.......
I really believe more schools and people dislike Ole Miss more so than State.
I'm just glad I am not an Ole Miss Rebel nor Democrat.....don't understand either one. You both live in a different world.
Great article.....enjoyed reading your copy and post as you'll put it........

52% of freshman class are out-of-staters.......
With comparatively low tuition costs and admission standards, the out-of-state student population at the University of Missisippi is growing.
Currently, about 65 percent of all Ole Miss students are from Mississippi, but it was recently reported that early estimates claim 52 percent of the ever growing freshman class are from other states.
This influx of students from across state lines can be explained by the aforementioned costs and admissions, but some students say coming to Ole Miss is alluring in other ways as well.
Students from many different states, countries, backgrounds and walks of life have found a home here, including senior international studies and French major James Buchanan, from McKinney, Texas.
“Going into the process, it was not my first choice,” Buchanan said. “But after visiting the campus and meeting professors and other prospective students, it felt like it would be a good fit.”
Buchanan said what first attracted him to Ole Miss was the Croft Institute for International Studies, as well as reasonable tuition costs. “I am not happy having to pay out-of-state tuition, but it is so much cheaper than paying in-state and going to the University of Texas,” he said. “I have had no problems with it, other than the periodic tuition hikes.”
Buchanan said he is happy with his choice to come here, but is still adjusting to life in Oxford.
“I have enjoyed my time here in Oxford, but I still haven’t gotten used to the culture quite yet,” he said. “I love football season and the laid back attitude in the area, but there are things I would change. I do feel that I would say the same things about any college I could have attended, though.”
Another out-of-stater who wound up here is law student Patrick Henderson, from Charlotte, N.C.
“I wanted to stay in-state, but I got waitlisted so this was my next choice,” Henderson said. “There were actually a lot of people that got waitlisted at North Carolina and ended up coming to Ole Miss.”
Like Buchanan, Henderson was also attracted by tuition costs at Ole Miss.
“Tuition was one of the main reasons I came here,” Henderson said. “The out-of-state tuition wasn’t too bad compared to almost every other school I looked at.”
Henderson has also had to adjust to the different lifestyle in Oxford, but said that living here has been a good experience for him.
“It’s definitely a bit different here from North Carolina,” he said. “But I definitely don’t regret coming here. I’ve made a lot of good friends, and I’d definitely do it again.”

I'm literally worried that I'll punch a hole through my computer if I read them.
I've worked really hard to fight negative perceptions about Mississippi and the South in general. When we air our dirty laundry and spew shite at each other like this, it doesn't help.

Yea they are pretty vulgar, MSU and OM guys going at it... some pure hatred in those comments. Lots of stupidity on both sides too it definitely doesn't help the Mississippi stereotype.

Aside from outburts of idiocy from Coonass and fits of vulgarity from me, I think the OM/MSU flame wars on here are pretty funny for the most part.

Last time I checked we both lived in Mississippi. There is no different world, we aren't aliens. Your reasoning behind not liking a whole range of people is not understanding them, therefore perpetuating the Mississippi sterotype of a backwoods, redneck, idiot. It's people like you who give this State a bad name. It's people like you who can't think outside your own world to try to understand someone else. Look in the mirror Bobby, the arrogant arse hole is staring back at you.

pwned
And spot on post. Some people are too narrow minded, not everyone looks, acts, or dresses the same or has the same goals or interests in life. Just because someone is different does not mean they are a douche. While some at OM think they are better than everyone, most are normal good people. I have many friends at many different schools and towns, who all dress/ act different.
Better to judge people individually based on how they act and treat you than how they are perceived
