2023 was the first and only season of the CFP era that a 3-loss team did not make the top 12.

It will play out a bit differently with automatic bids, but if history is any indication, 3 losses is rarely a disqualifier from being in the top 12.

3-loss Teams in Top 12

2014: 4
2015: 1
2016: 5
2017: 1
2018: 4
2019: 2
2020: 2 (Covid Year)
2021: 1
2022: 2
2023: 0

You do realize a Power 4 team who is NOT a conference champion must be in the Top 11 not Top 12. That's because the G5 team that must make the CFP will likely NOT be in the top 12.

So, SEC teams wanting to make the CFP in 2024 are aiming first to be SEC Champions and second to be Top 11.

One of the reasons I mentioned the automatic bid part.

Can the G5 be unranked and still get a spot? Is it a guarantee no matter what? Genuinely asking...I do not know.

The new 12-team College Football Playoff field will include the six highest-ranked conference champions, which will receive automatic bids. The top four teams will receive a first-round bye to the quarterfinals.

The six highest-ranked teams remaining will round out the 12-team format.”

LINK

SEC, B1G, ACC, Big 12 champs get in along with TWO shite conference champs now that PAC-12 is gone.

Then the rest are the highest ranked teams who didn’t win a conference.

It's pretty damning that our 8-3 team would've still made it in 2020.

Yea, except is now two G5 conference champs that get auto bids because the PAC-12 blew up.

Are you sure it's 6 conference champs now?

with the SEC and B1G both playing harder schedules this year, I think a 3 loss team has at least a 50/50 shot, but obviously it depends on how everyone else does..

I want the 5 seed. How many losses does that take?

Thanks. I wasn't sure that was finalized yet. I thought it was still a question as to whether they extend a 2nd G5 bid or just go to 5 AQ's from 6.

If nothing else the 12-team playoff will make conference championship game weekend even way more interesting than it already is.

4 losses. Tell your coach to aim for 4 losses.

What’s really crazy is Florida would’ve made a 12 team playoff Mullens first 3 seasons.
