With plenty of time for emotions to cool down and all the information we will ever get available, what is the Rant’s final verdict on whether he and/or Cecil got paid?
My opinion is AU did not pay him. The most logical story I have heard came from someone in the Mississippi St athletic department early in the 2010 season prior to the story breaking. He claimed that Cecil asked MSU and other schools recruiting him for the 180k, but that AU was not heavily involved at that time.
He says Cecil’s approach was stupid. He was way too open about it to the point that it became widely known throughout the SEC that Cam was being shopped and NCAA involvement was inevitable. Other SEC schools, including MSU, backed off recruiting him believing him to not be worth the risk. We are talking about a talented but unproven JUCO player at the time, not the Heisman winner.
Eventually Cecil realizes he screwed up and AU enters the picture late in the recruiting cycle as a last minute option. AU was desperate for talent under Chizik, and while not crazy enough to pay him, decided he was worth having the NCAA asking questions since they were confident they didn’t do anything wrong and could defend his eligibility as long as no one actually paid him and it couldn’t be proven he knew that his Dad was acting as an agent.
AU knew an investigation was likely before the season started which is why they were so prepared when the slow NCAA finally showed up in November.
Basically the entire scandal boiled down to a dumb arse pastor with no idea what he was doing asking way more than anyone was going to pay, getting zero, and eventually banned from watching his own son play or receive the Heisman.

Won’t know for sure until the “ongoing investigation” is over.

Anyone who thinks that Scam and his dad didn’t get paid is a complete idiot or is either a person complicit in the payment. It is an absolute insult to ask or state anything to the contrary. The buying of Newton is very well known. What is interesting, is attempting to estimate the value that he would go for in this NIL era. Rest assured, it’s far more than the $180,000 he and Preacher Daddy received for the original deal.

Good or bad. He's in your head 15 years later.

Remember the time Tracy Wolfson drank his Cammy Cam juice?

You know why he wore #2?
Because 200,000 wouldn’t fit on the jersey
I’ll show myself out now, tyvm.

He wasn’t the preseason superstar people make him out to be. In three preseason publications ranking SEC QBs, Newton was ranked 7th, 7th and 8th.
Still the most impactful single season of any player in SEC History

Confirmation Bias. Look it up. Learn what it means.

I took such great pleasure in watching Cam rise above the haters and win it all. The guy got screwed by corrupt Alabama media and boosters and I will always remember the smile on my face watching him break it off in Bama’s arse after being down 24-0.

Cam was NIL when NIL wasn't cool

MSU was the primary rival school you were dealing with in regards to any NCAA violations. Alabama did not recruit him.

LSUfreek was the best. Cam's Cash Cab was good too.
15 years later it’s looking like the Plainsmen got a great deal. That money won't get you a lazy DT.

Then why was his diddy pimping him out for 200k?

Star players have been getting paid for decades so I’m fine if he got the bag.
$180k was low though considering LSU gave that much to an offensive lineman 2 years later.

He has stated he was paid.

Players have been getting paid for years, no reason to believe Cam was any different.
If Iowa was paying players in the 1920's, it's foolish to believe everyone else hasn't been doing it a very long time.
