You just have to know where to go to locate it now. The old town residential district will equal that of many larger southern cities. There is still a charm about downtown even with the modern style court house. Big Springs Park is a throwback to very old Huntsville And then there is Monte Santo. Huntsville has grown, especially in the 60’s and 70’s but preserved much of its history as it grew.
No doubt the infrastructure is southern, just the residence and workers are more transplants. I think it is a great area with places like the Jones Farm area, the Ledges, Monte Santo, along with the downtown area. The fact that Lake Guntersville, Cathedral Caverns and Little River Canyon all within an hours drive checks all the blocks.

In all seriousness, I have known people from all over the country that have moved to Alabama thinking we had nothing but dirt roads.
A number of those have since moved away because of the nature of their work, but all want to come back. The ones that are still here want to retire here (in part because of the low cost of living).
To each their own, though. I guess it just depends on what you value, and what type of community you want to be a part of.
I just know that a whole lot of people that come here don't want to leave.
I was in line at Johnny's in Homewood a couple of weeks ago and was talking to a young man from Atlanta. He moved here while his wife was in dental school and they both got jobs in Birmingham. He said he and his wife fell in love with the area and have lived here for over 7 years and will never move back to Atlanta. He was surprised by his own change of opinion of Birmingham, but we agreed to keep it a secret.

I know/work with several people who moved here for jobs and all have been surprised at Birmingham compared to their perception. Most have moved here permanently (mostly from Charlotte but several other large Eastern cities also) and want to retire here.

Nice. It never seems to come up when people talk about good B’ham restaurants, but I always put it in the mix for lunch. Johnny’s catered my housewarming party in several years ago and everybody loved it. I don’t leave downtown for Lunch very often, but when I do, it’s usually for Johnny’s.

I avoided it for years because it was always crowded, but it is the best meat and three that I have ever eaten. That includes Nicky's West. Plus, it is fun watching the Chef/Owner. It was also featured on True South on the SECN. Much better example of Birmingham Dining than Andrew Zimmern showed on his show.

This is obviously a troll thread, but as others have stated, the 1.1 million Birmingham metropolitan area is very large. For example, I live in Baton Rouge and the 850,000 people here basically live in a fraction of the area as those in the Birmingham metropolitan area. I have never understood that about Baton Rouge. Everyone lives between Port Allen and Denham Springs / Zachary to Prairieville, which makes traffic horrendous. In Birmingham it takes about an hour to drive across the metropolitan area with no traffic. In Baton Rouge it takes an hour to get to the grocery store (slight embellishment).
I actually just bought a large plot of land in Trussville to eventually build on for retirement. For those that enjoy hating on Birmingham, drive through Trussville, Mountain Brook, Homewood, etc. All those places have a very unique Norman Rockwell community vibe. Trussville has really taken off and is extremely family oriented with walking trails for miles along the river with soccer and baseball fields all along the way. The high school looks like a college campus with the amount of trees, outdoor cafeteria area, and bridge over the creek that separates it from the football practice field. My 25 acres adjoins a very nice neighborhood and has 100 foot elevation changes and a river running through it.
Your statements are like the guy that adamantly declares he hates a certain food, even though he has never seen it.

Vestavia Hills don’t count as Birmingham.

Birmingham is a solid town and it's always strange to me when people who should know better (in the SEC footprint) act like it's Baton Rouge or Memphis.
It's got decent burbs, nice aesthetics/topography for a southern city and enough dining/nightlife to survive. It doesn't have the upside of Dallas or Atlanta. But unlike Atlanta, Birmingham has largely insulated areas where you can live/work and avoid riff raff contact for the most part. Of course, in Birmingham you're in closer proximity to legit white trashiness, but it's a trade off.
Mountain Brook has no real comparable in the Deep South. There is a higher high end in Atlanta, but there is no insular place like it until you get to the park cities, and they're becoming close to unattainable.

Any city the Democrats control will suffer the same fate. Montgomery is equal or worse. If the Airbase and State government were to leave, hell will follow. There are still a few safe zones but they are getting smaller every week. Selma was one of the best cities in Alabama when I was young and is now the armpit of the South. No different than New Orleans, Atlanta, Memphis and many others.

Just read an article about James Beard award nominees, Birmingham had two or three.

Am I reading this correctly? You're grouping Atlanta and Birmingham with Memphis, Selma, Montgomery and New Orleans?

Birmingham has long had a pretty high end culinary scene, it's just really small.

Unlike Birmingham, Huntsville is attracting new Industry and is a relatively safe place to walk the streets and shop.
I've never felt unsafe walking around Birmingham. Most of the crime takes place in concentrated areas and are drug/gang related. Pretty easy to avoid those areas. Pretty much like any other city.
A lot of good things happening in this city right now.
