Mobile, Birmingham, and Montgomery all have the very same problem, and it is not fixable.

LOL at intentionally moving 25 miles away so that you can go to the local Belk or Lowes and not see a minority. Which is essentially your point.

By the way, nice how you took it to the level of calling me a bigot by my shopping, dining, and entertainment choices. Tells alot that racism is your first accusation when someone doesn't agree with you. Not surprised your formative years were spent in Athens.

Or is it you who's racist, automatically equating crime to minorities.

The population is aging, and luckily Birmingham has one of the premier medical systems in the world.

Based on global and regional reputation alongside academic research performance, U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the top 10 percent of higher-education institutions globally.

Subjects ranked include Surgery; Clinical Medicine; Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems; Endocrinology and Metabolism; Public, Environmental and Occupational Health; Microbiology; Molecular Biology and Genetics; Biology and Biochemistry; and Social Sciences and Public Health.

Aside from UAB, how many times have you heard names like James Andrews, Lyle Cain, or Larry Lemak? There's a reason professional athletes go to Birmingham for treatment.

Highlands was rated the best restaurant in America, I do not think it is the best in Birmingham. And that is a very high standard to compare against.

Wow, how this thread has been hijacked to characterize the overall quality of Birmingham simply by its restaurant scene.

And LMAO and SMH at Auburn "fans" loving and financially supporting Birmingham.

My .02 .. and again, the food scene is wonderful in Birmingham, and I live within easy driving distance of the place and have traveled there specifically to eat before and will again, and I’ll offer a hidden gem in the Mexican restaurant in the shopping center on the hill at Deerfoot Parkway and U.S. 11 right outside of Trussville … of cities in current SEC states I would put the food scenes of (in alphabetical order), Atlanta, Charleston, Nashville, New Orleans and Savannah over Birmingham. And stretching out I’d rank Asheville over Birmingham. So in that much of a hole just in the South, it’s hard to get to Top 10. Top 25 with a bullet? There’s a case.

The geographic center of the SEC once TX and OK join will be about 10 miles south of Tupelo in the middle of a field. Put it there.

His two other restaurants are open and the Highlands will be open soon. Doesn't take away the recognition of the restaurant. My guess the pandemic has affected all the top restaurants, especially in LA and NY.

Thompson,I presume? My goodness, they have gone from perhaps the state's worst facilities for football (in large school classification) to something half the 1-AA schools would covet.

Yup. Back when the city only had one high school - heck, only one school at every level. My older brother got into the "new high school" when it was built in the early 90s, so I was basically taking classes in a brand new building - a far cry from the miserable middle school we had. That was a dump. I think the building was repurposed into municipal offices or something.

As to the OP, Birmingham is a big city, with good and bad like most big cities, and the same problems that most big cities have.

If you enjoy urban life … I do, I vacation in cities, for me going to the beach is like being relegated to the bottom floor of eternal hell … you deal with it.

If you don’t, you move somewhere else.

Is what it is.

If it was up to Bama, the Iron Bowl would still be played at Legion Field.

Reading through these 200+ posts, the biggest thing I'm getting from this thread is that we need to have a Birmingham Ranters meet-up one weekend and drink the shite out of some beer.

Fellow vinyl collector here, I'll have to check out Seasick next time we're passing through! My wife will just love that suggestion ...
