I will forever hate Rich Rod for this. It's crazy to think what the college world would look like if he accepts the Alabama job and where Saban would've eventually ended up

I remember when it came down that he "turned us down" last year.

We never even offered him. He only interviewed.

Assuming Saban stays in Miami for another year, here were the following coaching openings

Arkansas
Baylor
Colorado State
Duke
Georgia Tech
Hawaii June Jones
Houston
Michigan
Mississippi
Navy Paul Johnson
Nebraska
Northern Illinois
SMU Phil Bennett
Southern Miss
Texas A&M
UCLA
Washington State
West Virginia

Tennessee fired Fulmer in 2008 and would've been the most attractive job on the list alongside Michigan

I often wonder had Saban declined the Bama job if he would have landed at Auburn a year (or 2) later?

correct, but the new coach was for the 2009 season. That would assume Saban doesnt jump for two years

The day Rich Rodriguez said no to Alabama, Nick Saban said yes

From the column:
quote:

Because he said no, Nick Saban was able to say yes. That very same day. Not completely, not directly and not in any detail, but the day the Rodriguez door closed for Alabama, the Saban door re-opened.
It's always been my understanding that the two events did indeed happen on the same day - just not in that order.

Rodriguez didn't turn down the Bama job, the offer was withdrawn.

this would assume Bama's new coach comes in and wins in 2008 and recruits like saban did in 07 and 08

I was living in nyc at the time. I left work and walked over to the waldorf. I blended in with ivan maisel and walked in to the lobby. So, a kid from birmingham, all i knew to do was call in the finebaum show. He has me live on air, i am walking through the lobby. I go to the front desk and ask to see Mal Moore. I am turned away. I take the next turn and walk right into Rich Rod and his wife. I was instantly shocked at her appearance. I began to describe her on air and the rest is history.
Btw, Rich Rod was one big dude. Had he heard me ,I wouldn't be here today.

Saban at Michigan would have been formidable.

Agreed, but which happens first in this scenario, Michigan hire or Saban new job

Does Saban go home to WVU

The best line in the article:

"I just want you to know you've hired a horseshite football coach," Saban told Moore. "But nobody will out-recruit me."

I remember being a student worker, sitting in a squad car (front seat not back), it being cold as frick that night, and hearing this news over the radio. I just had to laugh at the time. My undergrad advisor was a WVU grad. I think he has the photoshop of Rich Rod in an Alabama tee pinned up in his office to this day.
