Cam got kicked out of school, and Billy D mostly avoided the 1-and-done types that dominate the top of the NBA draft. Baseball is such a shitshow with signability and high schoolers and signing bonuses that #1 overall means a lot less.

I think we'll eventually get one in baseball, but football will be a longshot without a "pro ready" system for QBs and basketball is about to be 100% high schoolers and international players once the age rule changes.

Richardson was a much bigger bust because his cost was much greater.

Yes, Robinson was a #2 overall choice, but Richardson was a #3 overall choice in the 2012 draft and *then* the Colts traded a 1st round choice to get him from Cleveland which turned out to be the #26 pick in the 1st round of the 2014 draft.

2 1st rounders >>>> 1 1st rounder

QED. You lose.

How in the world did the SEC not have a #1 overall choice in the MLB draft until 1989?

SEC had never won a NC in baseball either until 1990 and have now won 11

State was close several times. In 1982. Johnie Cooks was the second overall pick by the Giants. Bailey Howell was the second overall pick by the NBA in 1959. Will Clark was the second overall pick by MLB in 1985.
So close but no cigar on the first overall picks.

Obviously, it is a great honor and only very select few are in the club of first overall pick in the Big 3 sports.

SC had the #1 draft in the NFL in 1980 in George Rogers.

Yup. South Carolina has two, but George was before the SEC.

How in the hell has Bama not had a #1 overall choice in the NFL draft since 1948?

Good thread topic, I don't understand why it is not more popular. I don't think it is that odd for Bama to only have one, and is a reflection on nfl teams more so than Bama. I have read up on Gilmer he may very well be the best Bama player for the time he played in, but I digress. Number one picks tend to be picked on needs more so than talent. Granted all number one picks should have talent, but a last place team usually needs a qb(among other things). Looking back I bet we can find a case where just about every sec team had the best player in the draft but was not picked first because the team with the first pick had a greater need. Has Bama ever had the best the qb in the country? Not that I remember.

I don't know why this post is getting down voted. Kind of interesting, even if it doesn't mean much.

As an Independent, if memory serves.

George Rogers was a legendary running back, but I'm pretty sure you can't find his stats in the SEC record book.

Read my rules (again).

Well, Broadway Joe did go #1 in the 1965 AFL Draft. He went much lower (12th) in the 1st round of the NFL Draft, but ol' Joe was making ut clear that he was going to insist on a lot of money (for back then) so some of the teams nearer the top may have been scared away from him.

SC is an SEC school ... we've had two (2), George Rogers and Jadaveon Clowney.
