Here's the link to the thread. The source linked therein only takes you to the official SEC website. I'll get you a verified and updated rule.
And the other rule about lightning is when it's within 20 miles to warn the crowd, thats what they did because it was within 20 miles but NOT 6 miles and it was a JUDGEMENT call to suspend the game. They were not forced to stop the game by rule.

Describe the events as you remember. From the first time you heard the announcers to the time the game was suspended.

Wow. A series win and they're still bitching. I didn't know LSU was located in Austin.

They never said they were forced to stop the game due to lightning. They had to warn the crowd because it was within the much longer distance by rule, but clearly the storm was quite a bit of ways off. It took over 45 minutes for rain to even get to the stadium.
Put the pieces together. Once again, they never said they had to stop the game BY RULE. It was purely a judgement call based on the impending big storm coming, which they just happened to misjudge.

You boys were the first to bitch in this thread.

Hey, thunderbird ... You oughtta go celebrate your team's success with a cold beverage or two, rather than arguing with a few farmers on a message board about lightning, mileage, and outcomes that didn't happen.
Bottom line: Some folks at a baseball park made the call they thought was appropriate, based on the info they had. It happened. It's over. You win. I'm jealous as heck--wish it was my team in LSU's position.

From the NCAA rulebook. This is mandatory authority.
The Umpire-In-Chief shall:
More on it:
So the umpire-in-chief is the arbiter here. He's bound by the guidelines. But it's his call--not anyone from TAMU's. TAMU folks consult him if he seeks them. But unless you want to suggest we lied about the proximity of lightning, this conversation is over.
The umpire-in-chief makes the call.

In the case of lightning, the game administrator and umpire-in-chief shall follow lightning guidelines in the appendix section

Thanks for the advice. I'll take it into consideration.

I never said he doesn't. But you dont seem to realize the home team provides the guy who relays weather information TO HIM.
You better believe he was overselling the storm being much closer than it was so they would call the game now to ensure our starter got taken off.

Fortunately, the Umpire-In-Chief had his handy-dandy rule book when making his decision. I bet when he made his decision, he considered the absence of rain at the time.
So he just flipped to the guidelines, to which he's bound, and discovered:
quote:
The existence of blue sky and the absence of rain are not protection from lightning. Lightning can, and does, strike as far as 10 miles away from the rain shaft. It does not have to be raining for lightning to strike.

Right. Welp, if you want to say TAMU lied to the umpire, go for it.
There's just nothing to else to say.

Both the Umpire Chief & the SEC's Weather Official are bama grads & they just wanted to screw the Tigers any way they could.

Well Mainieri said this morning he was gonna take Nola out after that inning amyway so it's really not that big a deal even if A&M stopped play too soon.

And I never said it cant lightning with no rain. I simply said clearly the STORM was way off if it took 45+ minutes to arrive after they stopped play.
My point is they were not FORCED to stop play by rule, it was a judgement call. Please get that through your thick skull.

I never said he flat out lied, but you're pretty naive to believe if aTm was up a few runs instead he wouldn't have kept that storm being that far away in his back pocket for a while longer until he HAD to say lightning was too close to play by rule or it just started pouring.

exactly. I have been watching college baseball a long time and i have NEVER seen something like that before.

In a weird turn of events, you managed to quote language that directly conflicts with your point without even realizing it.
The storm could appear "way off" from what I'm sure is your astute, mile-predicting eye, and yet lightning could strike. That's a fact.

You don't know how far away the lightning was at the time of the call.
I understand that because it took 45 minutes for the rain to fall after the suspension, you're sure lightning was dozens of miles away, and that TAMU surely distorted the truth.
But that doesn't make it so. Not at all. That is pure speculation. That's it.
