2014 Vanderbilt Commodores Football Preview

2013 Recap 9-4(4-4)

The 2013 season was another full of firsts and excitement for Vanderbilt. Winning the Compass Bowl over Houston sealed their 2nd straight 9-4 record and gives them 24 wins over the past three seasons. The Commodores' overall record of 16-4 in the past 20 games is second only to Alabama's in the SEC. Jordan Matthews rolled his way to the SEC’s all-time leader in both receptions and receiving yards. Vandy also beat Georgia, Florida & Tennessee in the same season for the first time ever. For Vandy Nation it was a season that we have seen far too few times in our history.

2014 Offense Preview
(* denotes starter)

I have no idea really. We are the only SEC school with a new head coach and he comes from over there in the West so I haven’t gotten to see much. I expect OC Karl Dorrell to run a west coast style offense like Stanford did. With many new starters, I’m not sure how well they will do in certain schemes. One thing for sure is y’all don’t know what the hell to expect. New coaches, new QB, new receivers. The one constant and definite strength of the team is the offensive line, even with the loss of Wesley Johnson.

QB – *Patton Robinette, Stephen Rivers, Johnny McCrary

Let’s start with the question marks, shall we? Our one time 6-man QB competition is now down to three. The safest bet to start week 1 is Patton Robinette, the guy with the most Vanderbilt name ever and whom Tebowed his way into history against UTK last year. He is the only guy on the team with real time experience. The guy I expect to really push him is Rivers. Remember Philip Rivers, the goofy-looking QB of the Chargers? It’s his bro. Think taller, lankier and thus goofier-looking. He fits Mason’s style so I’m sure they will give him every shot to win. McCrary is the most talented QB they have, but he is slightly behind the others grasping the offense.

FB - *Kellen Williams

A former walk-on linebacker, Williams has earned a scholarship and will be the only scholarship player a FB.

RB - *Jerron Seymour, Brian Kimbrow, Raphael Webb, Dallas Rivers

Seymour finished 4th in the SEC last year with 14 rushing TDs and should be the workhorse, although injuries have kept out of fall practice so far. Kimbrow, everybody’s favorite “Too dumb for Vanderbilt” jitterbug, is in his 3rd year at the school and is looking for his breakout. Ralph Webb is a RS Freshman who has really impressed since he came to campus and will get carries, while true frosh Dallas Rivers is the big back that Mason wants and may get playing time.

WR - *Jordan Cunningham, *Latevius Rayford, Kris Kentera, Josh Grady, Trey Wilkins, Gerald Perry, C.J. Duncan, Caleb Scott, Trent Sherfield

Absolutely the biggest question mark on offense. Jordan F’n Football & Jonathan Krause were both top 10 in the conference and are now in the NFL. Cunningham is the only sure thing here, and he needs to continue to improve. Rayford played early last year but finished injured. Josh Grady has went from QB to WR to QB to WR again this season, and should produce. C.J. Duncan is one to watch and Caleb Scott is the son of Vanderbilt All-American Chuck Scott.

TE - *Steven Scheu, Nathan Marcus, Dillon van der Wal

TE is expected to be a position of importance to Mason. The good – There is a good bit of talent here. The bad? They haven’t done a dang thing on the field. Scheu played last year and is a good blocker, while Marcus has been CDM’s favorite guy to talked about this offseason. Van der Wal has one more chance to live up to 4* status.

OL - *Andrew Jelks (OT), *Andrew Bridges (OT), *Spencer Pulley (OG), *Jake Bernstein (OG), *Joe Townsend (C), Kevin McCoy, Delando Crooks, Sean Dowling, Barrett Gouger

Probably the strongest unit on the team. Jelks and Townsend have been mentioned on watch lists, and the entire line has experience as well as depth. Keep an eye on the Bernstein Bear.

2014 Defense Preview

New coaches bring new schemes and Vanderbilt will be moving to a 3-4 defense this year. The defense is considered the better unit on the team, although the entire starting secondary graduated and is in the NFL now. The Defensive Line is probably the strongest spot.

DL - *Vince Taylor (NG), *Adam Butler (DE), *Jay Woods (DE), Barron Dixon, Torey Agee, Nifae Lealao

Lots of talent and experience on the line. Vince Taylor looks the part of a nose guard. Butler had a strong year last year and Woods has actually trimmed down and seems to be very good a shedding blockers. Watch Nifae Lealao, who comes in as Vanderbilt’s highest rated recruit ever.

LB - *Darreon Herring (ILB) *Jake Sealand (ILB), Kyle Woestmann (OLB), Caleb Azubike (OLB), Nigel Bowden, Zach Cunningham, Stephen Weatherly, Ja’Karri Thomas, Jonathan Wynn

Another strong unit for the team as long as the converted ends can stand up and run through you instead of around you. The starting unit has good experience and some highly recruited players back them up. Watch Bowden and Cunningham, who were hard to keep the redshirts on last year.

DB - *Paris Head (CB), *Torren McGaster (CB), *Andrew Williamson (S), *Oren Burks (S), Jahmel McIntosh, Darrius Sims, Tre Bell, Taurean Ferguson

The defenses biggest question mark after losing all 4 starters. A few guys got experience toward the end of last year, but the starters are still in question. Head and Williamson look to have secured their spots.

2014 Special Teams Preview

Carey Spear, who many around the SEC will remember for making big hits on kick returns, will leave the Kicking spot open to either Taylor Hudson or Tommy Openshaw. Colby Cooke will return as Punter. Darrius Sims is the expected returner.

2014 Coaching Staff

Derek Mason is the SEC's only new head coach this season. He spent the last few seasons as Defensive coordinator at Stanford, leading one of the nation's top defenses. He was chosen over Clemson's Chad Morris among others. He brings over Stanford linebackers coach Dave Kotulski to be coordinator of the new 3-4 defense. He also brings in Karl Dorrell, a former HC at UCLA, as Offensive Coordinator. Expect a lot less gimmicky scheme than what James Franklin ran.

2014 Schedule

Aug 28 vs Temple
Sept 6 vs Ole Miss
Sept 13 vs UMass
Sept 20 vs South Carolina
Sept 27 @ Kentucky
Oct 4 @ Georgia
Oct 11 vs Charleston Southern
Oct 25 @ Missouri
Nov 1 vs Old Dominion
Nov 8 vs Florida
Nov 22 @ Mississippi State
Nov 29 vs Tennessee

Vanderbilt's schedule sets up about as good as you can ask for being in the SEC. They only play 4 "road" games this season, although 2 of those are some of the toughest in Georgia and Mississippi State. You can't really say any game is a sure thing, but the out of conference schedule is survivable at least, consisting of Charleston Southern, Temple, UMass and Old Dominion. Half of you probably don't even know where the last three are. Having bye weeks before going to Missouri and MSU should help.

Off Season Report

There is a need for new guys to step up and lead after the departures of Jordan Matthews, Wesley Johnson, Andre Hal & Javon Marshall. The new QB will have to take charge, and if it's Robinette you have to feel good about the leadership after leading come-from-behind victories against the likes of Georgia and Tennessee. Center Joe Townsend should step right in to lead the line. On defense there are lots of good leadership types. I expect Andrew Williamson to do a great job. Caleb Azubike and Adam Butler can also lead.

Jerron Seymour should be ready for the season. WR DeAndre Woods has great size and could be a future star, but a significant injury last year is still lingering and hampering his effectiveness.

The worst thing hanging over the program is last year's rape case, which is still going on. Also, Mason's pick for his defensive line coach, Vavae Tata, went on a drunken joyride and pinballed off some cars near West End. He got demoted and Mason replaced him with former Utah State line coach Frank Maile.

Keys to Success

One of the biggest keys to success will be working out the kinks against Temple before hosting Ole Miss in week 2. That will go a long way to making a successful season. If they pull together and take one of the early season bouts against them or SCAR, they could be 4-1 prior to heading between the hedges. Of the D can adjust to 3-4 lifestyle and the offense can find someone to catch passes it could be another quite successful season in Nashville.

The Anchor

With only 8 returning starters, Vanderbilt has to get a young team prepared for the rigors of the SEC fast to remain bowl eligible for the 4th consecutive year. I will make a prediction of 7-5 for the year with probably another Compass Bowl win over Rice or something. The OOC should get you to four wins, Kentucky's lack of depth should make five. Tennessee is also young and will meet us at the very end of a hellacious schedule so I'll go six and take one more from either Ole Miss, SCAR, MSU or Mizzou.

There are many new things going on at Vanderbilt this year and should make for a wild and mildly successful ride in a cluster of an SEC East. So be sure to stay and enjoy the Vandy-Temple game directly after watching SCAR demolish A&M on the 28th on SEC Network. #AnchorDown

Yeah, I did a double take when I saw that stat too, but I forgot to check it while editing...just checked it and it's no where close to being right. I'll go ask what he meant to put

Good read, but I think the Vols put a beat down on Vandy this year.

Your comment that playing us at the end of the year after a "hellacious" schedule is technically true. But the 3 weeks before we play you are Open Date, Kentucky at home and Missouri at home. So we are coming off our easiest 3 week stretch of the season.

Also ALL of our 32 elite freshman will be playing MUCH better at the end of the year than at the beginning, so I think most would agree that you actually probably play us at the worst possible time.

Good job. I was leery about analyzing the team this year because there are just too many unknown variables. Thanks for stepping up to do the hardest SEC team to analyze this season.

I find it highly ironic that the guy with the most Vanderbilt name ever is an E. TN kid from Maryville (aka Murville - in spitting distance of Knoxville only far more rouge neck).

Not a slam (always proud of local kids as they so often get overlooked because we're lower population) just amusing as hell.

Yeah, 1 Vandy poster did the vast majority of this preview. With all the unknowns, I think he did a great job

I don't think 24 wins in the last 3 years isn't 2nd most in the SEC. I'll get back to the poster and ask

Hey nice job on this Vandy write-up. Lots of work I'm sure. So excited for this year to get started. Even if we start slow, I think we will be getting better - on both defense and offense - as the year progresses. I do think we will be successful: best talent ever and amazing coaching. When Mason starts talking Xs and Os; impressive. Amazing to think how well this coaching thing has gone for us: Johnson found some hidden gems (Mathews and Stacy); Franklin got us in the right state mentally; and now Mason, a real coaching genius.

Hey good luck to all the SEC. Hope everyone stays healthy and everyone has something to be proud of come season end.

P.S. if they send us to the Compass Bowl again, ... well, they better not do that.

Quick question, since vandy beat us last year, is it ok to talk shite this year without being tacky-by-default?

I think the stat he was looking for is that Vandy is 16-4 in its last 20 games, which is second in the SEC over that span, behind only Alabama.

Ah, okay. Solid stat. I'll add it to the OP if you don't mind me poaching it for you
