After three days of emotional deliberations, personal and professional discussions with family members and close associates which tore Nick Saban in two directions, the Miami Dolphins have a new head coach.

Saban decided Saturday to leave his comfort zone at LSU, a university for which he has great respect and fondness, and accept the task of rebuilding the Dolphins organization. The decision came after long Thursday and Friday sessions at his home in Baton Rouge, where he weighed his future with his wife, Terry, and his agent, Jimmy Sexton.

"We've never ever taken over successful programs," said Saban, who announced his decision, after apprising university officials and his players of it, at an evening news conference in Orlando on Saturday. "We've taken challenges that were difficult, worked hard and had an effect in a positive way. That's one of the reasons I feel I can be successful in this challenge."

It must have been one hell of a gut punch for LSU fans to turn on SportsCenter Christmas evening to see the scroll on the bottom of the screen that Saban had accepted the Dolphins job. It must have been painful.

About the 3rd year I no longer thought Coach Saban would stay permanent in BR. He doesn't suffer fools well and there is a sizeable noisy element in the fanbase that can be irritating. This same crew forgets about all the yelping in 04 after a 9-3 season and a last play loss to Iowa (56 yard TD pass )...but a season that immediately followed a CC and 1st major NC in 45 years. Also oddly the very same crew that yearns for Coach Saban now like a spurned lover.

Meh. Coaches come and go. The P&G is the only constant. LSU CFB was here before him, continued after him. Just like Coach Miles, his successor, and on and on.

It was not surprising when the news became official. Actually, I recall feeling more terrible for him than being mad. I knew it had to be a tough decision. In the years after his decision, I have spoken to LSU administration and people in the football offices. They all indicate that the decision took a toll on Coach Saban, he really suffered through it.

Sure, the fans reaction to the Iowa loss helped Saban make his decision to leave...7 days earlier.

Give it a few weeks, you don't have to imagine what it felt like for much longer

The quickest way to shut someone up who "knows" Nick Saban is going to leave Alabama after this season is simple....challenge them to put $$$$ on it. You'll quickly find 90%+ aren't really convicted at all in the stupidity they're spewing, it's just them wishing.

The other 10%? Ain't nothing better than free money.

For the record he was a horrendous NFL coach. He won't go back to the NFL, he just doesn't have the mind for it. He is a wonderful college coach as we all know, but he just can't handle the next level. As a Dolphins fan I know this, and so does the rest of the NFL. At least he tried, I guess that counts for something

The year after Saban left, the fins went 1-15.... Has anyone really had success in Miami, that wasn't named Don Shula?

its true that being a Dolphins fan does make you a bit of an expert on shitty NFL football.

and so does the rest of the NFL

then why all the rumors about teams wanting to pay him millions and millions to coach their team?

What kind of ego must a man have to have a press conference like this on Christmas night.
