Shortest time between winning a national championship and subsequently being fired/forced to resign. In fact, the current record belongs to Larry Coker, at 1,786 days, and Chizik hasn't even been at Auburn that long overall.

Coach Team 'Ship date(most recent)Slip date Time elapsed(days)

Larry Coker Miami Jan. 3, 2002 Nov. 24, 2006 1,786
Jim Tressel Ohio State Jan. 3, 2003 May 30, 2011 3,069
Phil Fulmer Tennessee Jan. 4, 1999 Nov. 2, 2008 3,590
Lloyd Carr Michigan Jan. 1, 1998 Nov. 19, 2007 3,610
Bobby Bowden Florida State Jan. 4, 2000 Dec. 1, 2009 3,619
Woody Hayes Ohio State Jan. 1, 1969 Dec. 30, 1978 3,650

Less than 18 games and there was a groundswell growing. Now at 18 games since hoisting the crystal, there is almost unanimous support to can him. It's quite amazing.

He was no higher than 5th in bearing responsibility in winning that championship:

1) The bagman

2) The cleaner

3) Newton

4) Malzahn

for Coker to hold on to the 'Ship-to-Slip record, Chizik would have to still be employed at Auburn on Dec. 2, 2015 — more than three years from now. Does anybody in Auburn think this is going to happen? For that matter, does anybody outside Auburn think it will? The answer to both questions is "No, sillypants,"

Yeah. It is amazing how quickly the worm turned, but I think most Auburn fans have figured out that winning a title with Cam and Fairley was a once in a generation kind of fluke.

I don't blame them. No excuse for the shitty product he's putting on the field this year. Last year was bad enough, but most could understand that there needed to be a rebuilding season. This year's abortion of a season would be enough for any fan base to call for a coach's head.

If you don't think there are wheels in motion that will lead to his departure in one way or another at the end of the season, I don't know what to tell you.

That's not to say he couldn't save his job by winning out, but that requires beating Vandy, which I don't see happening. I'm not even worrying about A&M or UGA at this point, much less Alabama.

It really is strange, Chizik was on the mountain top two months ago and now....

In another strange twist, Malzahn was cursed all of last year by a number of AU fans. Now most are singing his praises and some even want to hire him back as HC.

That would one-up the Chizik deal. With Malzahn you have love-hate-love- and then when he fails as HC(and he will) hate again.

Richt, yes for another two seasons.

Chizik, nope. I think he goes after this season. If I thought they might pull off an upset before the season was out... Just one... I'd think he might get another year but that ain't gonna happen. And I wouldn't be so shocked if he was gone before the Iron Bowl.if he loses to either of the "sure wins" he will be gone immediately.

OK, I should have not visited ITAT to get my info. Seems like he and Jimbo are the two most mentioned on that site.

how long did Danny Ford stay at Clemson after his NC?

What about the coaches at Ga Tech and Colorado when they co shared a title in'90?

I don't see how they can fire him two years removed from a national title and sell job security to the next potential coach. Who would want to take the job with that quick of a trigger by the AD?

McCartney was the Colorado coach and he stayed until he retired. He is a legend there.

Bobby Ross coached Georgia Tech and left to take over the Chargers who he took to the Super Bowl.

Ga. Techs coach went to the Chargers of the NFL.

McCartney at Colorado stayed for a while before retiring durin a mini scandal. I don't remember how long Ford remained.
