Why did we succeed running the ball this year?

I've been wondering why we had our first 1k rusher since Dexter.

I keep thinking is it a positive thing for Luke or a negative?

What do yall think?

Fewer negative run plays. Better run blocking.

Second half of the year we actually set up run plays instead of RPO with 100% pass protection out of the gate. Lineman were set to run block so they could set holes. Wilkins also played his arse off.

Do you think that is because Luke wasn't the O line coach?

So you think it was more play calling rather than coaching? Do you expect us to run the ball better than we did in 2016?

I hope we don't miss Wilkins's contribution too much, but I'm worried we might. He did indeed play his arse off.

Wilkins seemed to be more patient later on letting holes open up instead of running into the backs of the linemen.

1) Wilkins played extremely hard
2) Longo's system did actually permit for designed run plays rather than 10,000 RPO plays

Also, I think we ran the ball more in lieu of the bubble screens. I think it is somewhat of a case of doing one instead of the other.

Ta’amu ran the offense better than Shea. Ta’amu was a threat to run the ball also
which helped. Shea may be better suited for Michigan’s offense than he was for ours.

We were getting blown out every game in the first half of the season. We were running the ball to try and run the clock out. Garbage yards against 3rd string units.

This.

Wilkins was a completely different running back than he was 2 seasons ago. The man practiced and improved drastically in his time off.

How hard is it to get rushing yards when you are losing 66-3? Wilkins got 101 yards against Bama. Largely because they had called the dogs off and were playing starters against Bama 3rd string DL. Same deal with Auburn.

113 against a terrible Vandy team.
118 against a terrible Arkansas team.
124 against ULL is that a win?
147 against a A&M team with a coach with 1 foot out the door.

It wasn't scheme. It was a combination of playing terrible teams and 3rd string DLs in blowouts.

Wilkins ran hard. I don't think most would question that. He's not NFL material, but I don't question his effort this season.

Wilkens had 100 yards after the first 3 games.

A light came on.
