Nope, was in a frat for 4 years at Ole Miss. Here is my issue with frats though. Unless times have changed since I was there in the mid 90s, we did not really promote the proper way to act. Fraternities need to make men better people and when they fail at that, an example should be made.
The Betas back in '89 had a racial incident. It got them kicked off campus and section added to a University Studies course (do not know if it is still taught). Was it right to kick them off, probably not. Have any other frats done the same thing since, nope. Lesson learned.
The KAs got suspended because of photo evidence of some hazing when I was there. Was it the whole frat hazing, nope. Was it the right thing to do, yes. Lesson learned, do not take pictures of hazing
Lessons have to be learned sometimes and hard examples need to be made. As great as the Greek system is, it sets Ole Miss back all the time.
I was there when they banned the poles for our Rebel Flags. Guess who was leading the charge of protesting, the fraternities. It is a safe bet "From Dixie with Love" is dead because of frats.
Unless the frat was instrumental in turning these men in, they should face punishment.

FWIW the university could stand to punish the chapter on the "three or more actives" rule. If three or more actives partake in something, it could be considered a fraternity event. I doubt they would try to push that. Like everyone has said, the chapter needs to remove these kids. National fraternity will probably disassociate them as brothers too

Yeah I've been thinking about the 3 or more brothers thing

Also, this will likely be sparky's last hurrah as dean of students...
Not a good thing for the students or their fraternity IMO

Did not know this existed but wow, what a flexible rule to have. That means most of the things I did from my Freshman-Junior year were "fraternity events."

Yeah it was put in place for the university mainly for hazing allegations. The fraternity has little room to claim the actions of a few don't represent the whole fraternity
Scary prospect if you're the president of the fraternity. Dealing with the university can be a shitload of no fun

Unsurprising. Looks like the internal investigation is to clear the fraternity in the public's eye.

Some anger towards pikes in here.

To find a hate crime in the situation without previous written or spoken threats would not be unprecedented, however. In 2011, brothers Brian Wallis, 21, and James Lee Wallis Jr., 25, along with Tony L. Johnson, 30, pleaded guilty to committing a hate crime by intentionally attempting to intimidate African-American students who were attending Beekman Junior High School in Beekman, Morehouse Parish, La.
In order to intimidate the students, the Wallis brothers and Johnson hung a dead raccoon from a noose on a flagpole.
They later admitted to authorities in the federal case that they hung the raccoon to intimidate the students.
Looks like there could be a serious chance for hate crime charges

Sig Ep suspended = good.
If they helped turn the guys in, like the NYTs article alludes too, then bring them back. If not, then make an example of them.
The frats could stand to research their rushees better. I know we did not back when I was there and paid for it sometimes.

I really just want to bash their faces in. Examples need to be made. Every coach in the country will use this shite against us in recruiting. Memphis media has already found some opportunist bitch to throw another log on the fire.

How many students in a frat, is it 150 or so?

I think hate crime is going too far. People make some dumb decisions in life and extreme punishment for something that doesn't even have a clear victim is insane to me.
I think the whole situation is horrible, they should be kicked out of school and what not, but hate crime?
Hell, they'll be lucky just to find a job when their names get released

I would have more sympathy if it wasn't the same situation that has occurred each and every time there was a racial issue on campus. It is ALWAYS an out of state kid and ALWAYS a dumbass from the Greek community (I'm in a fraternity, so I include myself here).
It's more about making an example than anything else. It's time to finally really burn someone for this behavior so it won't happen again. It's a few dumbasses who think it's funny and won't be punished for it. Time to show them how they'll be punished.
Also, saying everyone makes mistakes doesn't apply here. Not everyone puts a noose around a highly revered civil rights figure's statue, one almost directly in the middle of campus, because "frick black people, that's why. *giggles*" and essentially halts all racial relations progress on campus. That's a complete farce in this situation.
