Andy Kennedy has done good things for the program. He has kept it afloat and has found ways to win 20+ games almost every season, which is pretty good for us considering that our basketball history isn't very rich. He also has an SEC Championship to his name and 2 NCAA tournament appearances, along with multiple NIT appearances. Needless to say, he has been able to do a lot with a little throughout his career.

However, I'm worried about the future. This isn't news, but his coaching scheme seems to lack a vital part of any team - a scheme. He seemingly lets the guys go out and play street ball and chuck up terrible shot after terrible shot. That plan works when we are able to hit shots, but when we miss a bunch of 3's, we literally have no other way to score consistently unless a big man has a career game (like today). AK used to have the Tad Pad and bad facilities, but now he has a great practice facility and an incredible arena. He doesn't have much of an excuse anymore for losing games like today, and we would be wasting all the money we have put into the basketball program if we can't seem to improve.

So, keeping in mind that we do have talent on the roster and that Kennedy has most of everything he needs to succeed, how long do we give him before we let him go if this trend of bad play continues? I love him and know him/his family personally, and would really hate to see him go. However, there comes a point when you have to make a change just to see if it works.

If you hear Keith Carter's commentary during the overtime today, he was bewildered. IS was playing with 3 subs and we still had our team intact.

Feed low, he kept saying, while we were launching jumpers.

In soccer, you tell the man closest to the goal to go for the rebound. We don't do that, nor does the shooter follow the ball.

Fundamental 101.

Since Vitter is now calling the shots, Andy is a goner.

Look for Longo to be on the sideline soon.

I think we have to be very careful not to jump ship on Kennedy prematurely. (Yeah I know he’s been around already longer than any other SEC coach). My point is, this is a tough deal. He’s never really bottomed out for a year or two (i.e. Rick Ray at State or that guy at LSU) so it’s tough to criticize too hard. If he had already flatlined a time or two, running him off would be much easier and make much more sense. I will say, that if this current team doesn't improve significantly we may be witnessing his first true bottom out this season. The SEC is better and I think most everybody in the league is better than Illinois State who got us down by 18 in the first half in our own building. It's obvious our expectations have changed with the new facilities. It’s dangerous territory when you start coach shopping, however. It could go well or really badly. I think he’s gonna get one more year. This whole no long term contract extension thing is also problematic for recruiting as well. It’s almost as if we have inadvertently ventured into no man’s land and the only way out is to make some sort of drastic change.

We should have pursued Michael White when we had the opportunity. End of thread.

I feel like this is AK’s time to step up to the plate and take us to the next level, but the arms race in SEC basketball that just started is exposing him. Finally put together a tough OOC schedule and we are failing to win the winnable games. Players that should be improving aren’t. We can’t put together 2 halfs. The grad transfer game is a gamble and it really isn’t working for us. This formula needs to be evaluated quickly or AK might be screwed.

This has been the case for X number of years now. AK hit his ceiling in 2013. We should have moved mountains to get Michael White... but a lot of posters on here said that AK deserved his time in the Pavilion. frick that. I don't care if he got us to the second round in 2015.

Ole Miss basketball didn't pursue one of its own strongly enough, and now he will be winning conference championships and contending for natties just down the road in Gainesville while waiting for the Duke job to open up. Thanks, Ross.

Getting real tired of blowing leads in the second half due to lack of coaching

I think we should let him finish his contract next year. Probably won't do much if this trend continues though...

I like AK, he's been a great coach for Ole Miss. I think if he's not stepping our program up now or next year, then he's always gonna be average to below average, and we need to get a new HBC and start a fresh regime. Give the program some spark. But you don't fire AK, he's been around to long for that. We let him coach out his contract at least imo. How long does he have on his contract? Isn't it up after next season?

I have two things- for those of you who say just let him finish out his contract next year how should we approach it? Not extending him any further would absolutely kill recruiting. We saw what happened this summer when that buffoon chancellor didn’t roll over the deal, we had two four star recruits decide not to enroll. If you’re going to fire him fire him but leaving he and the program in limbo like this is completely insane.

My other thought is who could we reasonably get that we know would give us better results? Andy’s message might be getting a little stale but he’s a great coach. Getting arrogant and firing pretty successful coaches is a pretty good way to sink back into the basketball abyss that our program was in until Andy came.

He’s underachieved this season but please ponder these two things.

As an outsider my take is only fire Kennedy if you absolutely know you have a talented replacement on board. If you fail. you go the LSU post John Brady and State past-Stansburry route and roll in your own shite for maybe 10 years
