Stats aren't the problem. Sustained drives is the problem.

That and our run game is still a issue

None of that means jack shite without points on the board and sustained drives to keep the defense off the field. Both of which Longo's offenses failed to do in the second half of every game.

The idea of longo’s offense is okay. Score shite ton of points and get the ball to your best weapons (this year it will be heavy on WR). I’m just worried about the LSU, Auburn, Alabama issue. Alabama and Auburn completely shut down our offense and most other teams got us figured out by the second half. Limited plays help speed up the offense but also gives less for people to scheme for. Hopefully they figure out how to get creative with more plays to open up the offense. Screen passes. Play action passes. Bubble screens. Plays that we never used last year. It doesn’t have to be a bomb every time.

Also we need to find a RB ASAP or none of this will matter. You can’t win in the sec with just receivers.

How about those second half stats?

Geez, Arkansas shut us down in the second half. Cal players/coaches were reporting to the sideline commentators that they knew what plays we were running because of repetition. What happens when you don't have an AJ Brown to turn a 6 yard pass play into a 50 yard touchdown?

I've said it over and over and over. Our quick strike, when it does strike, offense is the absolute worst thing possible for a our weak defense with no depth. Either they get worn down and give it up late or they give it up early because the other team's offense is just so much better than our D. Our offense needs to stay on the field much, much more and eat up game clock.

I think something we need to consider, especially while the scholarship restrictions are in place, is that outscoring teams may be the only way to upset some teams. We won't have the depth or talent on defense to compete with the top teams for a little while.

Take Memphis for example. Their defense is awful, but they can score tons of points. Their best shot of beating good teams is to just score more points than them.

I don't disagree that the offense needs to help out the defense by eating clock, but it all comes down to scoring more points. I think in college football currently, the offenses have an advantage, and we need to try and use that to our advantage.

I think this is a problem for sure. We have to be able to adjust on offense or expand the playbook. We can't have these inept second half performances. I still think having a high scoring offense is going to be the best way to compete in the short term though.

We ran the ball better at times than I have seen in a while. The problem is as soon as it was going good we would abandon it. Wilkins was really a difference maker when he was healthy. We struggled at the end of the year due to his foot injury. Pennamon and Swinney could have been excellent backs but im not sure how they progress given their knee injuries. RB position has been decimated by serious injuries (and dipshite oversight that cost wilkins a year).

I’m beginning to think the problem with Longo’s
offense wasn’t just the limited number of plays,
but Shea wasn’t a threat to take it upfield. If Ta’amu
starts the whole season, perhaps the running game
would have surfaced sooner.

I completely agree, and I would love Memphis' offense, but the fact is, as great as those stats look, we don't have a high scoring offense. Longo is not a good coach.

The fact that we may be retaining him is terrible.
