Man it’s time for football. We have digressed into arguing about ratios and aggregates.

Damn that's a good stadium same or bigger but those third decks should be rebel clubs.

The thing I love the most about VHS is no upper decks. You couldn’t pay me to watch a home game from an upper deck and really hate having to do it for away games. I’ve done upper deck in Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, and Austin and each was never worth it. Sitting lower bowl in Baton Rouge is great and same at Bama. Only thing we need to worry about above the main level is club amenities.

ETA: I forgot about the upper deck in Starkville too. I’ve been stuck up there for games too and will never do it again.

Agreed, and I don't think we need them ever

this is that first rendering from a few years ago that looked good but the actual result was nothing like it

Wow did that ball get dropped. Although, it almost makes you wonder if the reason the NE was built so crappy was to be temporary and allow an easier demo and rebuilt to eventually reach this look. But the fact they are concentrating on the west side now probably shows they are complacent with how it turned out and figure it's fine for now.

It would probably be done after the West side is done (whatever that entails). Bjork said the NEZ was expandable for a future renovation with the current layout. Doubt they tear into it for now though seeing as it was completed roughly 5 years ago.

That would look awesome. The cheap high school bleachers we have up there in the north side now look so bad and it’s the first thing people see coming in off the grove.

The SEZ was the best addition to the VHS, so if it were up to me I would work to incorporate that design on the east and west sides of the stadium. Replace the west side press box with a structure that resembles the SEZ and include an overhang to match. The next step would be to do the same thing on the east side with the Rebel Club. Modify that structure and add suites to match the SEZ and west side of the stadium. This would give you symmetry and more premium seating. It also gives you the ability to add suites to the NEZ that would match the other three sides of the stadium. I would look for something creative to do with the student section since beer is now sold in the stadium. Try to identify the Swayze equivalent for VHS. Remove the weird metal structures that hold up speakers and add a new video board that is wider and occupies the width of the NEZ (think Auburn but smaller).

The west concourse needs to be updated and the entire outer facade could use some work to match the Pavilion. It sounds like it would be easier to start over, but I do think there are ways to drastically improve VHS.

I hope they just mirror the east side. that thing could use some symmetry and continuity. expansion of the north endzone was very poor.

Hell NO. I hope they tear down the east side and make everything mirror the SEZ.

ear it down and start over. That’s the best improvement outcome

Not on college campuses with history. You can modify and have the same effect. Baylor had Drayton "FU Money" McClain and built a new stadium. It is super nice but it is actually quiet small. real small.

quote:

What makes Ole Miss special is the close proximity of the grove and the stadium.

This. In fact, they should tear down those two bland 1960's style buildings (Hume, Shoemaker) and extend a new grove to the stadium. You could find donors to donate machine move mature oak trees and have their name plaques on them and as their tailgating spot. I'm sure there would be some big interest for that. Im thinking easily 100k+ per tree and spot right next to the stadium.

quote:

Agreed, they really missed the mark by not mirroring the South end zone last round. It just looks like 4 different puzzle pieces smashed together

IMO, that's fine for a college stadium. It's a remembrance conversation piece, or if done right, can be an interest as a marker for growth. Bryant Denny is large and symmetrical, but kind of bland, Jordan Hare, bland. Tiger stadium is large with 4 different sides and facades is more interesting to me. The Swamp, Sanford, more interesting. Just my opinion though.

quote:

The common man's game in the South is no more.

I sort of agree. But trends dictate a lot of things. Personally, I hate large jumbo trons. Before those, stadiums were constantly loud. Now it's cheer, shut up watch the replay, start cheering again. it really takes the fan out of the game vs when there use to be a constant buzz in stadiums.

quote:

Why would people want to pay a ton of money to stand on a patio in the stadium with horrible views of the field when you can sit in the Grove during the game for free and drink for free and watch the game with a better view on tv. I can understand it being a place to go during halftime but I don't see the benefit of these spaces during a game.

Some people just want to be seen and not really there for a game to begin with. And you know this is true with every fan base and especially ole miss. My spouse isn't a bulldog and would go to a game with me, but I'm sure if she had a lounge where she could visit with friends and others casual fans or likes, she probably would. Also, bringing corporate types to a game. This is big.

quote:

Bill Snyder Family Stadium

Nice steep angles to get you close to the field in some sections and the open area is nice but that's another small stadium.

quote:

The thing I love the most about VHS is no upper decks. You couldn’t pay me to watch a home game from an upper deck and really hate having to do it for away games.

I laugh when certain fans argue about having 100k stadiums. So what? Upper deck views suck. Davis Wade has upper deck but nothing like LSU's, A&M, and the likes. State stills has decent views from up there. I'd rather sit home than watch a game in the nosebleed seats of Tiger stadium.

Last comment:
Vaught Hemingway's facade is way too bland for your campus. Also, the new pavilion is in a horrible location.

Anyway, found this as an interesting thread and provided and extra $.02.

And Swayzeballa...
frick you, you're cool!

BTW, white picket fence, south Mississippi, shade, near a live oak, if you want shrubs, you can never go wrong with Indica Azaleas. Formosa, GG Gerbing, George Tabor, Southern Charm. Depending on soil, Camellias are great too but not too close to a live oak. I like the Sasanquas like Cleopatra, Cotton Candy, Yuletide, Showa-no-saeke, Kanjiro.

Looks like we’ll be getting some news on VHS upgrades in January. With the demolition of the west side entirely, I hope that means the new west side closely resembles the SEZ. I’m excited to see renderings and hopefully Keith pulls off a better FB renovation than Bjork.

quote:

OXFORD – Ole Miss is planning a major renovation to the west side of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium as part of a master plan for the athletics department, athletics director Keith Carter told the Daily Journal on Thursday morning. The entire plan, which will consist of eight or nine different projects, will be announced in January 2022. The news was first reported by Brad Logan. Renovations on the west side of the stadium will begin following the 2023 season and will be a complete demolition and reconstruction, Carter said. The plan is for it to be finished by the 2025 or 2026 season. Carter said there will “definitely be disruption” during the 2024 season. It is still too early to know whether the new west side will impact the stadium's capacity, which is currently 64,038. The Manning Center will also undergo a $40 million renovation following the 2021 football season, with that project starting in either January or February as the first in the master plan. The athletics department is currently working with a $250 million budget for the westside renovations and there are initial renderings, though an architect has not yet been hired and planning remains in its early stages. The project will be funded through fundraising and issue bonds, Carter said. Carter said the cost of the entire master plan has yet to be determined. College athletics has become somewhat of an arms race in terms of facilities – and with Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC in the coming years, the need to keep up with the times is as crucial as ever, according to Carter. The last major renovation of Vaught-Hemingway took place in 2016. “This is very aggressive and it will for sure be the largest capital campaign we’ve ever embarked on at Ole Miss,” Carter said. “When you look around the landscape of college athletics, everyone is building, everyone is improving what they have. “It’s going to be important for Ole Miss to do what it needs to do to stay relevant.” The plan for the west side of the stadium is to, “totally bring the current west side down to the slab and start over.” After consulting with different planning companies, the cost to start from scratch would have been about the same as remodeling, Carter said. The vision for the west side of the stadium is to have six or seven different types of premium amenities for fans, including loge and rail seating in addition to club and traditional suites. Improved concessions will also be a point of emphasis, according to Carter. Carter said that the new west side will be more vertical than the current version and will put fans closer to the field. The east side of the stadium and north end zone will also undergo renovations at some point as well, Carter said. The goal is to have the west side renovation done “sooner rather than later,” though Carter admitted it likely won’t be done in a single offseason. For the 2024 season, Carter is hopeful to “get back as high as you can” so “you can get back to some mid-level.” Blueprints and defined plans for the project are not yet available, Carter said. “I don’t think we’re going to be able to finish this in one offseason,” Carter said. “There will be some disruption, but that’s just the unfortunate part of progress.”

Man that sounds amazing. I hope we incorporate overhangs to enhance crowd noise similar to the Seahawks stadium. Can make 60k sound like 100k.

If they can make the entire stadium mirror the SEZ and include overhangs it would be a really cool facility. They did mention a more vertical structure which would also help with crowd noise.

Connect SEZ with east & west. Also build the student standing area. Anything else I'm not for.
