As a black male how do I honestly defend Ole Miss if there is a public heated debate about saving Dixie, a song that starts off with I wish I was in the land of Cotton???

Newsflash, but Ole Miss IS in the land of cotton. That has not changed.

But if someone does try to change a few things in order to appeal to a large base than just Ole Miss I'm all for it.

bullshite. Dixie isn't keeping anyone off of our campus. If we give into to one group of pussies, then we will soon give into to a worse bunch of pussies like PETA. Let me guess, you're for the removal of the Rebels title too right?

The ASB is a joke anyway. The fact they can make meaningful decisions while running for office based on a popularity contest is hilarious.

Seriously, this!

As I stated personally it doesnt bother me. To answer your question the reason I care about political correctness is that when Ole Miss is on top of the sporting world, I dont want the conversaiton to be about Dixie, Confederate flag, or Col Reb. I want the conversation to be about a great university that is on the rise.

There are stupid people everywhere who will give us crap about our university all over the States. Dixie is a beautiful song written by a guy from Ohio. You shouldn't be so insecure about it.

In all the conversations I've had regarding OM, I have never met someone who has made the connection of Dixie having racist undertones. (OM fan or not) I agree that it's ridiculous that these kids are given the authority to make decisions regarding the school due to their having been popular around campus. I see myself as being fairly liberal when it comes to the schools image i.e. Colonel Reb but I believe that it is people like Sean Higgins that are wrong with the University.

Dixie doesnt make Ole Miss. A beautiful campus, beautiful women, a gameday scene that is second to none, a great education, a rising athletic department, and a student body that embodies America...its growing and changing in a good way.

True. But this would be the equivalent to me of someone petitioning to have the name Rupp removed from Rupp Arena because Rupp was labeled racist (you can argue whether rightly so or not). And I'd be offended. Because it's a part of the University of Kentucky's culture even if it isn't the one thing that totally makes the University of Kentucky.

quote:

To the guy that says I am what's wrong with Ole Miss you got it all wrong. As a black male in particular I find myself having to defend the University I love whenever its brought up. Why do you like that racist school? ...it's not racist just like America it has a past that it isnt proud of but has done things to move forward. You didnt see the Obama riots? ...that wasnt a riot just a couple idiots and since its MS the story was blown out of porportion by the media.

You can remove everything certain people believe symbolically represents "racism" at Ole Miss and there will still be people that will call Ole Miss racist because you'll never be able to erase the history there. I'm not saying that's right, but it is what it is. But you do nothing but bring untoward attention to the University when you put these things in the limelight and declare them "racist" when they're not. I didn't know of anyone outside of your ASB that was running around saying that Dixie was racist and Ole Miss was racist for playing it.

Your ASB is being a bunch of attention whores right now.

Mississippi isn't the land of cotton anymore? And you tell people that the University you now attend has come a long way from the 60s and James Meredith. And stop being a dipshit about it.

Personally I dont care if there is a Klan rally before each game, I dont get over emotional about simple things. But if someone does try to change a few things in order to appeal to a large base than just Ole Miss I'm all for it. You should be as well.

You obviously do care quite a bit if you're that concerned about a song perpetuating a perception that is going to unfortunately be there whether Dixie is or not.

Apparently ASB is really upset over the DM article and how it was written. I think most of them voted "nay" for reasons other than just not being enough student input...

I don't want to start a pissin match again on y'all's board about this but it wouldn't be the first time the DM fricked something up

Your confusing popular with being the only people who actually want to hold these stupid positions in student government.

Im agreeing with you, for the record.

True, I'm thinking along the lines of the people that actually vote in the elections for ASB. In college career (5yrs) I never once voted for ASB and avoided the asshats campaigning for them. Maybe I should've cared more.

I've know several people that have run. The most prominent reasoning: It will look good on a resume.

They were not under the illusion that stuff actually needed to get done while they were there though.

Yes, it should be nothing but resume fluff. If we started letting 18-21 year old kids truly dictate our University then we are fuuucked.

Stop posting videos of the girl I'm going to marry. Plays the violin/fiddle/guitar and sings a beautiful Dixie. Was the only good part of the whole damn documentary.
