Forrest gump was acceptable cause he was playing a special needs chAracter so the exaggeration wasn't unbelievable. The other two were pretty bad as far as authenticity is concerned.

The best east texas accent from a non southerner I've heard was Jack Black in bernie. Not saying it blew me away, but it didn't make the movie unbelievable like Hanks.

Real southern accents suck. Listening to some frickhead from mississippi or alabama say "dude" is one of the worst things ever.

I know he was born in Decatur, Alabama but is his accent representative of North Alabama?
Eh, he may have been born there, but he didn't live there. He grew up just a few miles from where I've lived my whole life pretty much, and this area is definitely considered the country. The accent around here generally isn't as thick as he potrays, but there are folks with accents that strong here.

Without looking ... the one that has always especially pissed me off is Robert DiNiro in Cape Fear.

I'm not sure what you'd call Brad Pitt's accent in Kalifornia .... a mix of things I suppose.

Some of The Walking Dead accents are not great.

That blond-haired girlfriend of the bad guy on Justified .... she doesn't play her Southern accent very well.

Worst ones are usually Yankee actors trying to play mean racist redneck southerners .... and they overplay the whole Billy Bob thang twang.

The problem with most move and tv southern accents is the pacing and total misunderstanding of regional drawls and twangs. It's not just an accent, it's a language. Listening to some of these folks is like listening to a Southerner speak french (Par-lay voo fran-say). There's just no effort in learning how or why someone from North GA might hava a different accent from South GA which is also different from Savannah which is similair to but still entirely different from someone from New Orlenas or Charleston.

I will say, though, that Billy Bob Thornton nails the Arkansas language in Slingblade.

Kevin Spacey in House of Cards is the worst by far. I like that show, but his accent is atrocious.

Has anyone mentioned Kevin Costner in JFK?

He sounds like his mouth is full of peanut butter.

I have never been able to watch Justified. The accents are out of control.

Whats worse is I feel this show is too far from reality. No one (especially a Jamaican drug dealer) has stepped out of an SUV in Lexington, KY and shot an RPG at a downtown building.

That being said I watch The Walking Dead with unwavering loyalty.

I like Spacey's. I can at least listen to him without getting annoyed.

I get irritated when non-southerners try to fake a southern accent and say "you all" instead of yall.

I agree, sort of. I think most of them do research and live amongst the people they're trying to mimic.

I've come to the conclusion that the southern accent is one of the hardest American accents to duplicate, and 99% of people don't have the ear to hear the nuances.
