It wasn't the case historically, but today it seems the marines are more selective and better trained so they're needed to spec ops missions. Especially in today's wars where vast numbers of soldiers aren't really necessary most of the time.
Though IMO I think the Navy could keep the SEALs for the same purpose and make the Marines just an elite spec ops portion of the army. Or just go back to selecting better army candidates and train them better. The Army today is a mess

As a Cavalry Vet I approve this post.
In '04 had to move two whole battalions of Stryker infantry to Fallujah from Mosul to support the marines in that fight.
