The same people stared at the Marine Corps recruiting office and doubted themselves and chose an easier door.

Come at me! It's not a flame if it's true ;)

You have it backwards. I tried to join the AF first.

Not I. I was probably brainwashed early on. My dad and his parents all were Marines. Not super Moto, but a family thing.

It's finally coming together isn't it, you're learning the truth about the Marine Cult.

My dad was navy but I had zero interest in that. The marines seemed like a bit much to me. I wasn't interested in some spiritual dragon slaying quest, I just wanted to get out of town

In honor of the Fourth of July let me list all of the Battles the Marine Corps participated in and/or won against the British in our war for Independence:

Ok everybody, have a great Fourth.

You and Lew but he's refusing to give this thread any attention, I even RA'd for a sticky. Words don't exist to express my disappointment in that and he knows it. He's trolling me in his own way.

...and happy Fourth to you brother. I actually do like Marines, never really had a problem with them TBH and they have a role to serve.

I know! I've enjoyed this thread. Wish there was a military board with good discussion and advice for our veterans.

Enjoy your day of freedom

There are two kinds of Military boards on the internet:

1. Bitching about "muh VA" and "The way things was"

and

2. Quality banter the likes of which few have ever seen

the first is super common, the second is harder to find. Not sure I trust the average TD'er to help build the second. Have you seen the Poli-board?

All four have very different capabilities and mission statements.

What metrics or data are you using to make this gross assumption?

Do you have any military background or experience?

He's joking.
At least I hope so.
Unless you're an 11B in the 75th or an 0321 or 0372...infantry is infantry.

Actually I do.

I had my time in the Army before my knee blew up. I grew up in the military. This is not my first rodeo.

The Marines, while not up to the standards they claim, are a semi-elite fighting force. They have a high standard of training which puts the average Marine just a notch above the average Army soldier. Semi-elite. Not elite. Not the fricking Navy SEALs or the Green Berets.

Now... that having been said... Marines have become a Swiss Knife in that they try to do everything. When facing a specialized Army force of equal size they tend to have a lot of problems. They can't handle a heavy armor division. Elite light infantry in bad terrain gives them a ton of problems.

They used to be specialized in amphibious assaults and have gotten away from that, mostly because they have not had a chance to do it in decades, so now they are trying to fit into the niche of really good at everything but not great at anything.

So yes, the Marines are a semi-elite fighting force that is good at everything but not great at anything other then amphibious assaults... something we haven't carried out in a long time.

The metrics and data I am using is a lifetime spent in the military and dealing with it once I left. The Marines are, man for man, just a notch above their fellow Army soldiers but in the modern specialized realm of warfare they are actually a bit below the Army because today it its important to be specialized.

Semi-Elite. Not Elite.

The good old days shtick always got me. Everything seems better when you're in your 20's, in great physical condition, maybe serving in exotic locations having the time of life and great adventures; not yet jaded by the ugliness of true face of human nature.

Have you looked into any history boards? The relationship between the 2 seems like it would have potential for good leads.
