There really shouldn't be hate crimes.
Beat someone down, go to jail. Thinking something hateful about a group of people while they murder someone doesn't make it less of a murder.

This is true. There were laws on the books for assault long before we thought it would nice to attach race to it. It really is an unnecessary thing we have created.

I agree hate crimes are dumb, but I disagree with this. Premeditated torture porn murder is different than holding up a store and shooting the clerk in the heat of the moment.

But that's not quite the same. Premeditated torture porn murder committed because of race is exactly as heinous as premeditated torture porn murder where the victim is a target of opportunity.

Agree. The existence of hate crimes only serves to divide and worsen race relations. See this thread for example...one instance isn't labeled a hate crime and one side is pissed off. If it's labeled a hate crime the other side is pissed off.
Just label it a crime and be done with it.
