I've enjoyed a lot of series for a lot of different reasons. So, I guess the ones I liked enough to own on DVD/Blu Ray were:

Justified, Band of Brothers, True Detective Season 1 (I refuse to acknowledge Season 2's existence), MASH, House of Cards, Fargo

Toss up between The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.

I read a NY Times piece on The Sopranos that called it "the most significant piece of pop culture since The Beatles."

That's a strong statement, but I'm not sure it's wrong.

Sopranos
Game of Thrones
Breaking Bad
Justied (best finale ever)
Outlander
The Last Kingdom
The Walking dead
The Expanse
Fargo
Better Call Saul

Pretty much in that order so far for me.

Fear The Walking Dead ... has potential.

They tried hard to screw it up with the gay Vito season .... and the finale blew donkey balls at the diner - but still, it was a strong series. It could have finished the last two seasons much better IMHO.

That series was very very good because they had just about the perfect cast in play. There will never be another Gandolfini for that part.

I've been trying to find a way to watch all of season 11 with Supernatural... Hulu has a few episodes, but not the ones at the beginning of the season. I'm on 219 so I don't want to skip around. 1-218 are on Netflix but I've seen them already.

Anyone know of a website with them?

It's worth binge watching ... trust me. Especially if you liked The Godfather.

There was really no gratuitous violence or language, and there were a ton of comical parts ... but when it was violent it was violent.

What made it near perfect was how it mixed the family aspect in along with the counseling by the psychiatrist - which was an integral part of the story.

I can handle occasional violence and occasional language for really great acting with a great story. I just can't sit through hours of nonstop cursing especially taking the Lords name in vain. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I'll give it a go and report back

When I think about how big it was in its original run and the impact it had on dramatic TV series, that's probably not as much a stretch as it sounds when you read it.

For the OP, I can't pick just one in these things because both shows like The Wire and Freaks and Geeks are fantastic but two different beasts. So I'll go with Top 5:

The Wire
Freaks and Geeks
Mad Men
The Wonder Years
The Sopranos

*Sherlock is a dark horse

BTW how fricking brilliant is Matthew Weiner between his work in The Sopranos and Mad Men?

Also right now Black Sails is one of the best written shows on TV. It has potential to move up for me as does Game of Thrones.

TV: Breaking Bad
Netflix: House of Cards or Bloodline

Ok I really don't think True Detective II was that bad, it could never live up to the first season. It wasn't as good and we will compare every season to the first one.

I still need to watch Sopranos and The Wire, some of the other older HBO shows. Difficult to sit down for that many episodes.

I can't count that one because they failed to bring it to a proper conclusion ... they screwed up in that regard.

I read an interesting piece years ago about why they let it die - most of the cast jumped ship when they got into contract disputes and it was abandoned.

That cast was perfect though ... and they scattered in the wind to other great casts like Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, etc., etc., etc.

Others went on to make big movies.
