General George S. Patton. No shite. He was a cousin of my grandmother.

My great grandfather received a purple heart during WWII. He would never talk about it so the only way i ever heard stories was via my grandmother.
His unit was in France and started taking fire. He was shot in the leg but another member of his unit got shot and was in pretty bad shape. My great grandfather carried him to a barn and protected him overnight until help arrived.

My great grandfather "Papa" was a marine in WW2 in the pacific. He was wounded on two different occasions, shot in both of his legs. Had a huge Bulldog tattoed on his forearm. I was lucky enough to get his dog tags when he passed.
Great grandmother "Nana" was a Army Nurse over in Europe sometime in the early 40s.
Step Dads grand father was with the US Navy in the Pacific and had some crazy stories he'd tell once every blue moon. Old man was a proud shriner until he passed.
All 3 passed between 1990 and about 6 months ago

This is why I started this thread. Your grandfather is a true hero. God bless.

Also, not family, but a friends grandfather drove a landing craft during D-Day. Talk about some crazy stories. In my older age I regret not sitting down with these men and just asking them to tell me stories so i could get them on paper to keep. All but one WWII vet i know has died.

Dad's dad was in the Army. Earned a bronze star in WWII. I never got to meet him though, he died before I was born.
Mom's dad was in the Marines.

Grandfather and a ton of great uncles. My grandfather lost 3 of his brothers in the war. He would never talk about it to my father, and I was 5 when he died, so I didn't get to discuss it with him.

Civil War
I know you didn't ask about this specific war, but I've got a csb. Either my great or great-great grandfather (I can't ever remember which one) fought for the South in the Civil War. I have the Confederate money that he came home with in his pocket after the war was over.
WWII
My fraternal grandfather was in the Navy. I have no idea what he did during the war though. He never talked to my dad about it, and he passed away when I was 12. I did inherit his collection of mini-boats. They're a small replica of every ship in commission during WWI.
Korean War
My maternal grandfather was in the Army and stationed in Germany and Holland.
Vietnam War
My dad was a Green Beret, but no idea where he was stationed at; he won't talk about it. I actually had no idea he still carried around his Special Forces coin until he pulled it out one night at a bar. Apparently he always gets his drinks bought for him

But yes, all my bfs (and some of my friends) were terrified of him when I was in hs. He was a cop in the city we lived in. He always loved to be cleaning his rifles or shotguns when a guy came to pick me up or bring me home. He actually used one of my bfs in hs to help him sight in his new scope. I thought the guy was going to have a heart attack

his daughter stories for the BF's are to come to his war/trophy room. He has ears hanging on the wall and pics of decapitated people(was a bounty hunter in rhodesia) says" if I could do this to someone I dont even know, think of what I could do to a man who hurts my daughter"

My dad is 68. Doesn't look or act his age though. He bought a Harley and a Benz convertible this year

MACV SOG was a Special Ops Force during Vietnam wasn't it, with multi-services involved?
Hanging from 100ft rope? Sheesh. I'd pass, but that's badass!

Yeah, that sounds like something my dad would've done

My maternal granddad was in the Navy. He was originally assigned to a destroyer and later a cruiser. He got sick of kamikaze pilots, so he managed to become an electrician on a submarine. He would talk about the technical aspects of the submarine, but he didn't talk much about what he went through. I remember him saying that some guys broke down when they ended up going through a minefield, because there were a couple of times that they heard cables or chains scraping down the side of the hull. Out of three submarines that were patrolling together, his was the only one that didn't hit a mine.
His brother drove Higgins boats. My paternal granddad was too young to enlist.
