I met him and shook his hand in 2004. From 2004-2008 he was excellent at delivering uplifting, platitude-filled devoid-of-substance speeches. Perhaps the best I've ever seen.
This made him appear to have some sort of grand vision, like he was some enlightened new age leader. But there was nothing to back it up. As a person and as leader, he's actually ineffectual, dismissive, and didactic. Even his supporters have seen this now, and I can't imagine the embarrassment and disappointment they felt once he took office and the veil was removed

i personally like the guy and would like to beat him in a game of horse and drink a beer afterwards.

Lacks leadership abilities, probably not even the most influential person in his administration.
Not a very good communicator, doesn't convey his vision well.
Isn't going to destroy the nation, simply doesn't have the ability to push any far left agenda through.

There's not a lot of difference between the two, with the exception that far left whackos aren't protesting these last two Bush like administrations as much as they did the first two.

No attack on Obama, by anyone, will ever approach the vitriol that spewed at Bush every second of his presidency

He doesn't do a good job of making things seem under control which is essentially all the President does anyway.
