Obviously you know little about Macon. The home of mansions, museums and music has undergone a major renovation. The award winning downtown is amazing - packed with lofts, sidewalk restaurants and trendy shops. Mercer University, Wesleyan College and Midfdle Ga State give it a college atmosphere. More churches per capita than anywhere in America and beautiful historical neighborhoods awash with many of the over 400,000 cherry trees that adorn the streets.
Macon has probably turned out more famed musicians than any other town its size in the nation and the music scene is still alive and well. Little Richard, the Almonn Brothers, Otis Redding, James Brown, one half of REM, Robert McDuffie, Cher, Sting, Chuck Leavell, Jason Aldean and many others are either from Macon, lived there or recorded there. This city rocks! It definitely gives the Athens music scene some major competition nowadays. Most clubs are pretty swanky now and there are literally pianos on the sidewalks for anyone who cares to play. Movies and music videos are shot on a regular basis there and international film and music festivals pack in thousands. Macon has done an amazing job of reinventing itself in the past decade and I tip my hat to them.
I know this probably sounds like some type of info commercial for Macon. But unless you have actually experienced Macon the past few years you don’t know how incredible its transformation has been.
And back to BBQ - as good as Jackson, Georgia’s Fresh Air BBQ is, the one in Macon is even better. Best I’ve ever had anywhere. You should try it!

I've spent a lot of time in Macon actually, albeit not since 2010. One of my best friends from college grew up there and moved back after college.

The only thing worth seeing there is The Allman Brothers museum

sure, maybe for somebody who grew up in the country and has never been to the downtown of an actual city. The downtown isn't bad, but the bar scene and nightlife was on the trashy side last time I was there

Y'all definitely had y'all's share of rich snobs, but their opinions of themselves being higher than it should doesn't make it true. Macon isn't the worst place, but overall it kind of sucks

Like I said, I haven't been since 2010 and I'm sure it's seen it's share of improvement since then (I know Birmingham has seen massive overall upgrades in that timeframe), but I have a hard time imagining it's improved enough to call it "incredible"

But if that's your home then I'll take your word for it

I grew up in Atlanta, bowl. And a lot has changed in Macon since 2010. Maybe you should actually check it out before you trash it.

There's different "BBQ" styles depending on the meat being prepared. I like a vinegar-based, red pepper hot sauce for pulled pork: they call it "BBQ" pork, but it's really a red-sauce pork.

The best kind of pulled BBQ pork I've ever eaten, is how my family makes it: slow pit-cooked and covered in the ground, hand-pulled off the bone, hand-mixed with the red sauce right inside the skin, scooped out per serving and ready to eat. The most tender-ist, moist pork. I like my BBQ pork HOT!

For spare ribs I like a rub/sweet tomato-based BBQ sauce combination, and for pork loin I like just the rub, no sweet sauce.

For BBQ chicken, I like the sweet BBQ sauce, no rub - I do use a rub for grilled chicken, but IMO it's not really "BBQ" chicken, just for seasoning.....

At least you admit it.

Be thankful you have SC bbq in Birmingham now. You should be thanking Carolina.

He opened a new chain location in Birmingham because he can make money off yall.

People (should) only use that on chicken, not pork.

I also think it's nasty.

Maybe you’re right. I may visit Texas this fall, so I’ll check those places out.

I went to this BBQ chain called Jim & Nicks here in GA. I took two bites and was done.

I am from Louisiana and if you want good bar-b-que go West, east or north and leave.

On the way north, stop at Grayson's Barbecue in Clarence, LA. You won't regret it.

Overall, I've found Texas to consistently have the best. If Moses had tasted the sin that is Carolina "barbecue" (specifically NC) before he went up that mountain, he would have come back down with 11 commandments.

There has been an upwelling if very good BBQ in Houston Hu the heart of Texas BBQ will remain in Central Texas.

I do differ from my fellow Texans in that I prefer pork ribs over beef. And I want a dry rub.

But my heart belongs to brisket.

I would like to offer my services to go check out all these places that everyone thinks are the best and see what's up.

Maybe Chicken would sponsor me.

I also have a question for the Texans. Is Snow's really better than Franklin? I just can't imagine it.

After traveling east of the Mississippi for decades, there have been only a few cases of bad barbecue. You really can’t mess it up. Even I can correctly smoke a thanksgiving turkey and a butt for 10 hours in a Weber.

Before you see the list of a top Three, know this......regional barbecue is like southern football; everyone thinks theirs is the best. You really can’t argue about it and debating this subject is really only a method of demonizing the other. There are 2 different kinds of N.C. Cue, and the. There are too many Texas barbecues to mention. There are also too many breweries that sell cue and call themselves a cue place. What has happened is that the free market has offered us more options and the price of butts and brisket have gone way the frick up.

If you consider Kansas City SEC then it's second behind Texas.

In response to
Lol. Houston doesn’t hold a candle to Austin...

Opies
Franklins
Blacks
La BBQ
Salt Lick

Well I moved away 2 years ago but in Austin Franklin is still the best. However I would put Freedman second. Salt Lick is good for sausage and getting it at the airport. If I want Blacks I would drive to Lockhart but you have to go past Kreuz to get to it and that is a hard choice. The over abundance of very good BBQ in/around Austin is just amazing. Plus what I would call only good (Rudy's) would be outstanding elsewhere.

Never been to the other 2, but if Sonny Bryan's is your second favorite BBQ joint, you are really in for a treat.
They are not top 10 in Dallas, and I love their old school desks and BBQ sauce in coke bottles.

Which type? Eastern NC is different from Western NC and Low Country (SC) is different from both.

Honestly I like the vinegar ones the best followed by mustard base. And give me Cole slaw all day on a pulled pork sammich.
