Everyone one of you dumb bastards who compares this to the flu should be kicked in the face repeatedly.

I've always known most of you on this board are dumb as shite, but you never cease to amaze me in spite of that knowledge.

Where is this illogical narrative even coming from? I don't see it anywhere but on this site. The flu has nothing to do with this current pandemic, so why does it keep getting compared? The only reason the flu and CV should be compared are for medical reasons like communicating the difference in symptoms to patients.
The coronavirus is spreading so quickly that it is causing a high number of people to become simultaneously sick. That, and its concerning mortality rate are why we are taking it as seriously as we are.
The flu is deadly, but it's a different beast, and we already have some ammo to use against it.
They both suck, and there is no logical validity to bringing the flu as a way to downplay the coronavirus. They are completely independent illnesses.

US numbers as of today
From March 12th to March 22nd it went from 4,981 to 13,013.
In other words, in ten days the death toll doubled and then some.
The only reason it won't be worse in America is because we're practicing Social Distancing and self-quarantining.
What sucks with people like you is that it isn't real until someone in your immediately family or yourself is ill and then you'll wonder why you spent so much memory on trying to prove it was a hoax when the numbers suggest otherwise.

Right. We can't stop the flu in its tracks because its been with us for tens of thousands of years. It kills so many people a year not because it is particularly virulent, it isn't usually, but because it is everywhere.
The Coronavirus we have a shot at stopping before it really goes bonkers and we need to take that shot because it is, from all indications, a hell of a lot more dangerous than the average flu. Let us face facts folks, this is the most potentially dangerous outbreak since the Spanish Flu.
Take a gander at this news story about what the Coronavirus is doing to people who are in relatively good health. LINK
People are drowning in their own fluids. Its breaking down the lungs to the point where they are aspirating pink froth. That's blood ladies and gentlemen.
My father was on a ventilator when he died from a respiratory problem three years ago and I'm here to tell you... that is a bad way to go. It is a very bad way to go.
As the article says patients will seem to be responding well to treatment and then be in dire medical shape the next morning. Well... you might say... that can't happen here in the US with our health care system but the story is from New Orleans.

Well, that is one scary article.

Both are upper respiratory viral infections. Both have very similar symptoms and effect those with previous underlying problems with a higher mortality rate.

I wish Kyle was still contributing to this post. I like statistics but tend to put more bias into my thought process. I’ll just take 2 quick tries & welcome logical analytical disputes:
•Influenza kills (on the high side) 600,000 annually. I know that the common flu is seasonal but the average over 365 days is 1,643 daily. Covid-19 related deaths in previous 24 hours were 1,566. So within about 4 months of its introduction, Covid-19 is killing people at nearly nearly the same average daily rate as seasonal influenza. And it is still spreading, resources are becoming strained and may of us are not changing routines within our control.
•The 1918-1919 “Spanish Flu killed “up to” 60 million worldwide. There may or may not be comparables in terms or contagiousness or mortality rates since so little hard data is available. Just using this as a comparable since there is little question that Covid-19 will be the deadliest strain of the non-common flu
SINCE that strain. Play with estimated populations from then & now, infection rates and mortality rates. I see no way that deaths are not in the hundreds of millions worldwide before it subsided.

Unlike the flu, This one causes rapid onset ARDS in regular people.

In rare cases. But might want to decide if millions have it with no symptoms that we dont know about because of no testing or if acute respiratory distress is a common symptom. Cant say we are going to die of the plague and we dont know how many have it because the overwhelming majority never show symptoms.

I think people are also discounting that there are likely as many people dying daily in China as there are around the world -- but they are trying to suppress the numbers (much like Iran did in the beginning before it spread like wildfire).
The numbers of estimated dead in China are staggering, but they continue to report "~50" a day. Of course, considering that the virus spread to the rest of the world, it's very likely that it's all over China.

Maybe for the better of the good everyone needs to get exposed to this now instead of later.....
