Mine doesn't even compare to some of the losses you all have mentioned in this thread. I feel terrible for all of you. I hope you've all come to resolutions concerning your respective losses.

I was all prepared to marry this girl a few years back. We were probably too young, but I was totally ready to be committed. We prepared for and scheduled the wedding, and had everything put together. My entire family made it into town and we were all in a hotel together. I was already in my tux when she called to say she wasn't going to show up for wedding. To this day, I still don't know why.

It all worked out though, because I love my wife and the family we've created.

Third Thursday of January 2010. Had so much going for me at the time, finished school, had a decent job, was going to get married and then it happened. Was driving home from work that morning behind this little red truck that was going 50 in a 55 and I couldn't seem to get the chance to pass him.I had an 18 wheeler behind me that was basically tailgating me.

Shortly before entering this small town there is a county road followed by a bridge. Little red truck stops in the road because he missed his turn. I had enough room to stop because I was back 200 feet+. Truck makes his turn and as I'm about to take off the 18 wheeler plows into my truck and smears it down the concrete barricade. Last thing I remembered was hitting my head on the steering wheel and then waking up in the hospital the next day. Apparently when they cut me out of the truck I stopped breathing and died on the ambulance ride to Tuscaloosa.

Ended up losing a large majority of my memories and most of my close friends and family have said that my personality has really changed.

Girl left because of that, but I see that now as a good thing. Did ended up losing my job over it though which sucked.

Two things really come to mind:

1. A week or so after I graduated from UA my father declared to the whole family that he had been having an affair and that he was leaving my mom. That started a tailspin of poor decisions by him which ultimately ended up forcing him into bankruptcy (not from divorce settlements; my mom didn't ask for anything) and becoming a damn-near drifter.

Our relationship is still estranged. I've tried to reach out and mend that relationship multiple times over the years, but he isn't having it.

2. Seeing a guy I knew from high school die from jumping off chimney rock at Lake Martin. Overextended while trying to flip, knocked him unconscious and knocked the air out of his lungs. By the time anyone thought there was a problem, he had already sunk and couldn't be found. Took rescue divers to retrieve the body.

I've had two. When I was 14, a friend of mine was driving us to Krystal's and we left the road and hit a pine tree head on doing about 45. I had no seat belt on and hit the dash. Ruptured spleen and a mangled face were the results. I only spent five days in the hospital though. I was in great shape from football and I healed very quickly. The other was watching my dad take his last breath. He had Parkinson's so we were somewhat prepared. He had a stroke and never came out of it. We put him in Hospice because that's what he wanted, no food or water. I watched him slowly die over the course of about 10 days. I still miss the shite out of him, but I'm glad I got to spend 34 years with him. It really sucks not being able to see him grow into an old man. He was beloved as he coached about half the town in Little League and JV football. He was a DAMN GOOD DAWG! UGA baseball 57-59.

August 17, 2008. I took all 4 of my kids swimming at a creek near our house and none of us saw my youngest boy, Logan (4 1/2 years old) get in the water. He was playing in the little brook past where the creek was dammed up with my 7 year old and I was in the water playing with my 2 older kids. We couldn't find him and I hesitated about getting back in the deep water, electing to look around elsewhere thinking instead that he had walked off down a trail or something to pee, because he wouldn't pee in the water, lol.

When I got back in the water I went all around the edges and a stranger who had just pulled up with his kids and jumped in to help found him toward the center.

I heard him say "Oh God" and I turned around as he was pulling him up. I layed him down on the bank and looking at him laying there and knowing he was dead... well, that is all I can talk of now.

What's bad is that that wasn't the worst moment of my life. That would be about an hour later when I had to tell his momma, who didn't feel good and had stayed home that day, that I'd just let our baby drown.

Jesus, I gotta go.

i've had some pretty crappy experiences, but losing your son beats those by a mile. truly sorry for your loss.

my two worst are my mom getting hit while walking by our next door neighbor going about 60 mph. i still remember my dad walking in covered in her blood to try and explain to 8 year old that his mother was probably dead. declared dead at the scene, recesitated, 4 month coma, and 2 months of rehab and we had a shell of her back. probably 3-4 more years before I would say I had my mom back. i respect the heck out of my dad for being with her for that entire experience and raising 3 kids (one being my mom)by himself for a few years. he also had to basically fall in love with a completely different woman.

my other one that sucked is when i got a new job 4 hours away and had just put in my two weeks notice my wife told me she was leaving me and she and my son would not be making the move with me. We reconciled and now have a wonderful marriage.

Some people on here put those in perspective of how fortunate I am.
