First time going.. Booked my ridiculously expensive hotel and flight and looking forward to the trip.. Me, the gf, and some friends paid a visit to the Big Easy two months ago, and had a BLAST!!! Even on Sunday night, Bourbon Street was rocking... So tell me, will Mardi Gras be as crazy as I've heard? What kind of advice, tips, can you guys give me? Thanks in advance..

agree with DSJ
it will take you 1 hour to move 12 inches.

Bourbon is an absolute clusterfrick during Mardi Gras. Full of dumb tourist trying in a mass of trashy humanity.
Work the Warehouse District for partying.

If you know a local, it's best to piggyback on their Mardi Gras experience. Even the more family-centric parades are fun. Bourbon St and the Quarter are miserable unless you go early in the day and are out of there by lunch. We made the mistake of doing it one night, and but bailed after the 4th or 5th fight we saw.

You can get drunk at a local bar and have just as much fun.

Truth. Home base for me is almost on the parade route Uptown.

Did you book on Bourbon or in the FQ?

If it's your first Mardi Gras I'd at least go to Bourbon once. Monday is usually the craziest night. Be careful not to stumble around on back streets by yourself. Robbery is a real issue during MG

From just outside of nola. Normally go snow skiing for Mardi Gras but last year was the first time I stayed in the city for it and I can honestly say I'll be happy if I never do it again

It was awesome. 30 years ago.
Haven't been back in a while but I have heard they've cracked down on the debauchery.

Unless you are a devout Catholic (or Episcopalian), what business do you have celebrating Mardi Gras?

Definitely Bourbon St. for an hour or two during MG. Hop over to Royal St for a good time as well, Frenchmen St is great area as well. Go catch a parade or two as well.
But like others said, keep and eye on your stuff and stay in lighted and crowded areas.

I'd love to give you advice, about either Nola or Mobile. But once you said "Bourbon St was rocking," I'm pretty sure were aren't into the same scene.
Only advice I'll give, is to remember to eat food. Seems obvious, but it's important if you plan on drinking for 12-16 hours at a time. Also, limit shots. Stick to beer and single talls. Remember... It's a fricking marathon.
