I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he meant he'd rather eat that than Texas BBQ. Unless of course he normally eats his steak medium well, in which case he should be tarred and feathered.

Move Mississippi and Louisiana up the list.
Yes they are better known for seafood, but both states have people that can cook their arse off in any cuisine.
Certainly they are the equal of Tennessee in bbq.

Where would that be? For, research purposes of course.
Publications say The Shed in Ocean Springs.
It's probably popularized and watered down by now.
The best I personally ever had was at a roadside joint outside of Belzoni where we used to go after dove/duck hunting

Yeah I've heard it good. I live pretty close to the one they used to have in Gulfport. It wasn't great, but I'm not sure it was the same family that owned it. I think I heard they just bought the rights to use the name. I could be completely wrong though.

Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and South Carolina have all of those except a desert, and I think residents of those state would say you can keep your desert

This really isn't a great ranking. TX and SC should be at the top, after that everyone has some solid BBQ.
Kentucky? Really?

The correct list is:
Memphis
Texas
Carolinas/Missouri (Kansas City)
Everyone else
There is good BBQ in a lot of places, but nothing matches the quality depth and breadth of these.

I will say this.
Georgia has the best boiled peanuts. I always stop at roadside stands when I go through Georgia.

Honestly the shed is pretty Meh these days, they are turning out way too much and have spread a bit thin due to multiple locations and are banking on past reputation.
My list would start with
Abe's
Leitha's
Sonny's
Hog Heaven
Second tier
Little Dooey
the Shed
and too many more to list

i like dooey's sauce and fries... i don't pay for BBQ these days much. I prefer my own smoked with cherry and pecan.

I haven't been to Tyler's but it's rated in the top 50 in Texas, but somewhere around 35-50. With a rating that low I would be surprised to call their brisket great. It gets better.

I much prefer my own as well, but when on the road I will take a BBQ plate every single time over fast food.
I have probably been in 75% of the hole in the wall BBQ joints in the South.
